With 40K being such a big influence and so much grimdark about I'm finding problems with basing techniques. I'm throwing together a elven army and I want them based on grass as if they are fighting in summer.

No muddy pits of death
No gravel
No shale

I have tried to base them using woodlands scenic "Dark turf" over a (warpaints) leather brown and this looks quite poor, the turf doesn't really look like turf over soil. All the online example I can find either use tufts or break up the grass using a textured sand base. I like my bases to be plain and make the miniatures stand out.

Can anyone recommend a way of making a simple grass bass.
Bonus points available if it doesn't involve scraping the existing base covering off.

I am considering either static grass over the top of the turf or painting the turf brown and static grass over it.

Some sort of green felt cut to size perhaps?

Whenever basing I always start with soil. (Sand painted and drybrushed, grit and stones optional in the 'soil texture mix').

Then I usually put static grass straight on that. Either fairly densely (large blobs, close together).

For a really dense grass finish, don't use static grass all over, put down a large blob of fine turf, allow that to dry, then put smaller blobs of static grass as tufty bits in the middle of that. Use matching colours.

ALWAYS leave a little soil showing. It looks better.

I don't know if I missed something, but why not static grass at the start?

I'm sooo, sooo sorry.

Use sand, paint it as dirt, then add a thin layer of static grass. If that looks bad use some more. Continue until you are happy

Maybe something like this, just with more grass (and less shrubbery)? I've done it like how winterdyne described it: soil first, then static grass on top. I tried varying the grass by adding some yellowish grass in the mix, and also adding small bushes here and there. You might be better off just applying green static grass.

How about using something like this with your static grass?
