Subject: Advice on how to base 6mm figures

With the release of Kings of War 2nd edition, my pack of lunatic friends have decided to ignore the thousands of perfectly good 28mm figures in their possession, and create new 6mm fantasy armies. There are some pretty darn good 6mm fantasy figures out there! We're primarily looking at Microworld and Irregular, if you're curious. Any other companies out there we should check out?
Anyway, I've based Epic figures before, and lots of the basing material (flock, sand, fake grass) looks really weird at the 6mm scale. I've liked the Games Workshop texture paints, but they're a bit of a pain to use. They go on thick, and are expensive (we've got loooots of figures to base).
Any advice for how to base these smaller figures? Any good tutorials out there? I'd love to just use PVC glue and sand, but the sand I have is too uniform and looks weird, and if you glue the figure atop the base, the figure's base makes an odd pedestal that is hard to hide. Drilling out holes for each figure sounds... like a bit more effort than I want to put in for the scores of unit stands I'll be making!
Finally: here's a bonus question. We want to make an Ogre army. The 6mm Ogre selection is fair at best - Kings of War has lots of Ogre troop types (different weapon types, guns, crossbows, etc). Do you know any companies that make 10mm orcs? Or maybe even 15mm goblins? I figure these might be the way to go. Any other suggestions would be most welcome!

I can't help you on your basing question (I'm interested in the replies myself) but I can help you find 10mm orks. Pendraken makes a ton of 10mm fantasy figures including a large selection of orks and goblins. Also see Magister Millitum (spelling?) and Kalistra. They all make 10mm fantasy stuff. I've purchased figs from all three and have had great service all the way around.

I posted the same question over in another forum that specializes in wee scales, and have gotten some good answers. We'll see if anyone adds anything here, but this should get me (and others if curious) started:

Regarding the basing, vellejo do a good range of texture pastes which are better value than GW, alternatively I've been having a lot of fun with woodland scenics scenic cement, you can just put sand on loose and soak the sand with the stuff and it dries hard as a rock

I think.kow would be awesome in 6mm while.Changing nothing.else. so you are just using vast armies even in the smallest.of.units.
For basing I recommend gluing them down first. Using spackle, polyfilla or similar to make the ground level with the miniatures integral base then pva glue a mix of sand and small rocks etc. If you have basing grit or kitty litter try breaking down some of it and mixing it up so some is really fine and some is coarser.

Take trip to an artist's supply store.
You'll find texture pastes of all kinds from very fine, to very very coarse.
And reasonably priced.

I am doing KOW in 6mm at the moment too. I have my bases ordered but I use textured plaster and raise it over the base so their feet are standing on flat ground. Not sure if I will use super fine sand or keep the texture on the plaster but you need textured plaster or putty yo raise the height over the base.
Micro world is AMAZING.
Bacchus has limited 6mm too. But I personally would support micro world as they are expanding their range and frankly their 6mm stuff is the best.
