Hey guys, I'm throwing together a unit of space marines and I'd like to go with a Scottish theme. A cool tartan pattern is desired, but I'm unsure of the best place for it. I was thinking painting it onto the blank shoulder pads? Building them with close combat weapons, being the brutish highland warriors they are.

Anyone done similar things and have any tips? Figured those front dress things could act like kilts and the tartan would look good there too.

Interesting idea. Are you limiting the motif to a single unit?

What's the main colour scheme of the unit gona be? Because it's such a rich point of detail, perhaps confine it to shoulder or knee pads to make it stand out against whatever the main colour scheme of the marine is?

As you said, it could definitely work for the tabards supplied in the space marine and veteran kits. Also, perhaps draping the tartan like a pelt from the shoulder pad, or over the shoulders like a cloak could work too?

Cloaks would be awesome too. Definitely not limiting it to a single unit, I don't actually play...just paint and model, so I'd be happy to have an army with that same theme. Black and yellow tartan is what I'm thinking, will post a pic in just a minute.

Same.

Black and yellow's a fairly aggressive scheme. It occurs to me that you could play around with pattern and colour in a number of interesting ways: denoting rank, squad function (tactical devastator, assault, veteran,), personal heraldry for Independent Characters...

One of the hang ups I have with that particular tartan is that Im unsure of what base colour for the actual troop armour I'd use. It'd look stupid with blue armour, but would it be too plain with black? I recently did a unit of the BA Death Squad and made them black, they were cool because of the detail and iconography built in...basic SM squad is less detailed.

Positive of that tartan is that it's the one associated with my family name, so I like that part, lol.

Got a few spare shoulder pad bits...will need to try out a few ideas before the final decision is made. Will post pics when I do for critique.

Ironically I was gona suggest blue and white, (St. Andrews Saltire..) and using BA Death Company bits for the predefined 'X' patterns.

Perhaps it wouldn't look too plain on black. Bear in mind that Bblack with yellow detail is a staple of the Scythes of the Emperors' colour scheme. And you could definitely make both colours pop out more with the right highlighting and shading respectively.

My first thought is you could try to grab some Space Wolves tail/fur bitz to make small sporrans.
I like this idea a lot. Perhaps you could take an idea from the Tanith IG models and get a piper as your standard bearer? Wouldn't be hard to mod a little pipe-bag under an arm, and the chanters themselves could be brass rods or even snapped down pins.

I'd suggest headswaps from the Warhammer Empire Greatswords kit

(or the flagellant kit to make angry ones )

Don't forget the Iron Bru

But Iron Bru is the drink of the heretic

Also, as far as Highlsnders go, I do remember the Deathwatch RPG had a cool chapter mentioned called the Storm Wardens, which are a bunch of Highlander Space Marines, might want to use this picture for one for some inspiration

Shadowrun is the best game ever. It's the only thing I have ever played in which I have jumped out of a shot out van with a chainsaw to cut a flying drone in half before leveling a building with ANFO assisted by a troll, a dwarf, an elf, and a wizard.

Those look more like landsknechts. Flagellants might work though...

Here's my first, pitiful attempt at what I want the tartan to be.

Will need to improve, but I kind of dig the bright yello one.

you need to break up the lines on the tartan if you want it to look effective mate. i'd suggest not doing complete lines, but very fine broken ones that suggest the line, if you see my meaning.

First post outside of my introduction thread, very interesting topic since I want to make a space marine based on nationality too at some point.

I think an interesting design for Scot space marine would be keep it simple, but keep it recognisable as Scottish too. I'd go for mainly white, but the shoulder pad trim can be in blue perhaps. I'd paint the right kneepad blue with a white cross over it. One shoulderpad could be in yellow with the red head of this coat of arms (good luck freehanding that). http://www.flagshag.com/smaller/europecoats/Scotland_Coat_of_Arms.jpg

Some of the troops should have tabards (like the blood angels models) painted in Tartan. You could even use these heads on some marines: http://bitsofwar.com/home/70-imperial-highlanders-heads.html

Good luck, have fun!

Death Company with the crosses-on-pads painted as saltires.

Deep blue armour, with purple accents. Limited red/green tartan as it'll be a pisser to paint.

You should be able to get DC cheap on eBay from Shield of Baal: Deathstorm sets.

The blood drops could signify them spilling the blood of Sassenach, the Chaos God of the English. Or paint them up as Thistle heads!

You also need a single, solitary Adepta Sororitas fighter in a black cloak, to be "The Scottish Widow".
