I've been feeling like this game could use some rules for setting up your men in formations like a phalanx, firing line, Arrow head, Marching lines ect.

I'm trying to come up with formations and the strangths/weaknesses they could give you for taking them. Ideally i was hoping for a rock, paper, scissors effect but im aving trouble at that point justifying why you would stay in a loose skirmish blob.

Currently all i can think off is:
Loose formation( allows + 1" unit spacing.) +1 save vs ranged attacks,
Phalanx (base to base in a square, nominate a front) +1 bravery, +1 sv if unit has shields, -3 bravery if attacked from the rear -2 bravery if attack from the flanks
Arrow head ( arrange models in a tringle with the tip being the front) + 1 attack on the turn they charge, +1" to charge rolls -1 save vs ranged attacks +1 bravery if unit is cavalry

Would these be fun or interesting in a game of AoS?

Do you have any suggestions for formations or better ways to work the rules?

Or does the game not need this?

Anyways what do you guys think? Please let me know, comments and critisism is much appreciated!

I think it would make sense for some units to do this, such as Empire Spearmen, etc.

But some armies have the character of always being in loose formation (Beastmen), so those rules should be specific to the unit themselves, or at least a Keyword.

Are you a Wolf, a Sheep, or a Hound?

i feel like armies could have specialized versions of the same thing, but i also see beast men using the arrow head because they are like cav

Adds quite a level of complexity to an already complex set of buffs, trying to track magic, hero abilities, totem abilities, units own abilities, realm changes and scenario buffs is already fast becoming a pain in the neck.

Certain formations already have a bonus in AoC just due to the way the game works.

Block of range 3" spearman types with 3 ranks and 5 models wide is already basically a fantasy unit. The enemy cannot lap round (rules state pile in towards the nearest enemy model which would be the front rank) you would essentially get 15 models attacking for his 7

Arrowhead great for counter charges, enemy makes the charge to the front model can only pile in on that model, you can countercharge with troops further back in the unit.

Skirmish line with heavy hitters behind, just string out at max coherency and let the enemy engage, hard hitting unit can then just pile in when they want to slotting themselves between the skirmishing unit but protected from attacks as you can just activate them after the enemy has attacked.
