Is he still legal to take by himself as an imperial knight detachment? I've read people arguing that you can only take Gerantius as part of the formations as they don't specify the need for Lords of War (Gerantius isn't a LOW). Thanks

You've heard right. His datasheet puts him in a different battlefield role then those used in a household detachment or an outhsworn detachment, so he can't be fielded using those. There are a couple of formations which call for night, but make no bones about the battlefield role of those knights, and Gerantius is still a knight, so he can qualify for some of those formations.

Of course he can also be taken in an unbound army.

I dont think many people will have a complaint if you try to put him in the normal Knight detachments. But that would require their permission cause it isn't strictly RAW.
