Ok I finally got round to getting my Chapter together.

The IronKings - and here they are - my first GS and modelling attempt.

They all feature a crown, large right shoulder pad and a chain tabard.

I like the crowns, I don't think I've ever seen them before on a figure. Not too sure about the shoulder pad, can you give me more of an idea of what they're going to look like painted?

Yeh, at first I wasn't so sure of the shoulder pads either, but once I did the second one there was no turning back (before I knew about buying bits on Ebay). but with the whole squad in big shoulder pads it kinda looks ok.

In terms of paint job... i was thinking of something similar to the Grey Knights at first...

I think I will go with a silver/grey - iron look, use a burnished/old gold for the crowns and maybe one hand/arm upto the elbow can be gold.  All the insignia will also be gold I guess.  Will add some scorch marks or rust maybe... give them gold boots or something too i think.

This is just an idea - an suggestions are welcome...

I like it, it's very unique and well planned, any hint at color scheme?

um yeh - i mentioned the colors just above...

primer - black
base coat - silver/gun metal (metalic)
crowns, (maybe boots), trim - old gold (gold mix with a dash of red/brown maybe)
tabards - i was even think gold on here too... but i just dont know
Powerfist on captain - definately gold!
large right hand shoulder pad - maybe gold too, or something that looks more like iron (silver/gun metal with a dash of black and red)

I am going to try stick to 3/4 colors (Gold, Silver/Gun Metal, black, white) use red for the seals and maybe the cloak - try make it look a little regal.

But like i said, i really have no idea - this is my first ever set of miniatures, my first exp. with Green Stuff and painting mini's... wanted something a little different. Will post photos once I have finished my Librarian and painted the lot!

First minis and first green stuff?!@?!?

You're doing great then.

I recommend agianst mixing metallics, maybe shadow grey or codex grey for the bodies and gold as a trim color. Otherwise they can look a bit garish.

how do you mean? What if I mixed gun metal with some grey (will have to go buy more paints) at this stage i have limited paints... i think i have a gloss red and gloss white - yuk - dont know how that slipped in. But I have silver and Gun Metal and mat black + my black spray primer.

I did order a paint set but it hasnt arrived - i think it may either be stuck in customs or it has walked - which is highly likely with South Africa's postal service - its a real trick getting paint, bits or for that matter any GW stuff - the closest shop is about 30min drive away from where i live - and since i sold my car im pretty limited.

Also we tend to get ripped off on the prices here in SA. Ah well what can you do?

ah also busy modding my librarian at the moment - i want to create a little familiar - one of those short guys (looks like a Jawa) or a cherub holding a huge book, but i think that will be a bit more tricky. will have to try find some bits somewhere

CROM!

Neat stuff. Very barbarian-y. Looking forward to the painted pics.

Is it a trick of the camera or are those marines more 'squat'?

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

By mixing metalics I mean using more tha one metalic color on a single model, not stirring them together.

I sympathize with your plight, after 22 months in Guyana (1 to go! 1 to go!) I've had more than a few days of cursing the mail.

?CROM? - what does that stand for?

As to whether the marines are more 'squat' im not sure, i dont really have anything to compare them with... it may just be a camera thing.

I was considering what you had said... perhaps I will dull down the silver/gun metal with a bit of brown+red or black and then use the gold for inlays and details - like on the marines collars (just above their torso plates) and on their boots - I am going to draw up a unit, scan and color it to see what it should be... will post the concept.

thanks for all the suggestions and encouragement - keep em coming - the suggestions i mean.

I would go for something like the left. the right one is a bit boring. just an Idea, but I would add some dark red, maybe on the knees and elbows

so go with the straight gun metal and silver, with the dark boots and shoulder - adding dark red, mmm, im not so sure - will do a new color img.

I think that all-shiney-metal armies look not that good. sooner or later you'll have to include another color anyway for capes and stuff

Eh, not really digging the shoulder pads.  But that's not really important.

Very interesting concept, probably going to be hit or miss if people like it, but I can definitely see the appeal of it. I'm with the others that you will need some color in there if you have a shiny armor color. Maybe look at some Brentonians from regular Warhammer for inspiration on that.

Oh, and time to make myself feel old. Crom was a character from the original Conan: The Barbarian movie in the early 80s. And Arnold/Conan kept blurting out the name every so often. I just can't remember if Crom was the bad guy played by James Earl Jones, or the god he worshiped. It's been at least 10 years since I've last seen that thing.

From a Site about Conan;

Crom- Crom, the grim 'Lord of the Mound', the Cimmerian god, lives on Ben Morgh. The Cimmerians seldom pray to him; they believe it is usually best not to attract his attention. Crom is said to breathe the strength to strive and slay into a man at birth. After death, the Cimmerians believe their sould go to "a grey misty realm of clouds and icy winds, to wander cheerlessly for all eternity."

BTW; Its always great to see an original idea like what you have here. I look forward to seeing them painted.

thank you and thank you... yeh im looking forward to painting them.  so everyone keeps on about adding some color, so i relooked my color scheme - i still want to stick with an iron + gun metal + gold color, but maybe add some red.

Two ways of doing this as shown below - personally I prefer the splatter on the boots than a full red boot.  Also concerned that two different col hands/arms may look a bit 'harlequin'ish... dont know though.

CROM - hell i cant even remember the last time I saw conan... never mind remember the bad guys name or the name of his gods...

Since you guys dont mind mixing it up a little - look out for a series of books called "Otherland" by Tad Williams - awesome awesome series - read the first one and went out and bought the 4 part series.  Only book two never arrived.

Here is a thought, instead of doing the whole legs in different colors. Those tabards look quite a lot more like quilted armor than chainmail, and between them, the horned shoulders, and the cloaks, it should be more than enough colors. You could even use the tabards as personal heraldry and paint each one different.

they actually have heraldry shoulder pads - on the left shoulder - with space for a name tag.

but maybe use a red to paint some sort of design on the tabards... make it silver with dulled/flaked red. I am liking the right color scheme more and more. will just have to decide on the red and gold arms.

VERITAS NUMQUAM PERIT

Right... I think I have the final color scheme.

I have decided to go for a completely dark iron look - with darker iron on the shoulder and boots, some blood splatter and a little bit of red here and there - most likely on the heraldry.  Some gold trim.

So I will probably use gun metal mixed with a reddish brown to get the iron looking right, then either ink with brown ink and drybrush with gun metal and silver mix to highlight. (im not sure what comes first inking or drybrushing.)

well here is the color sample.. will hopefully have a chance to paint first squad and termi librarian this weekend... please if anyone has an idea of what colors may be even better than this LET ME KNOW... its my first squad, my first mini's and I want them to be as near perfect as I can get them.

thanks

well, first, I think its a bit too dark for "kings" and second I don't like those legs. looks like he jumped into a tomato field. ( or something more alive) (before the jup that is)

and flufwise Libarinas should have a blue armor with chapter colors on the shoulders and maybe the knees

right... i din' actually know that about the librarians... blue you say - mmm, he's gonna look like an Ultra - yuk.  Will have to look at that whole situation.

The image above is actually just a regular marine.  I know a few of you think my color scheme is not quite right, so here is the oppotunity to to show me an idea or two - i have made a clean version for yo uto copy and paint - doesnt have to bee too detailed, just an idea... bear in mind im not really a "bright colors" kinda a guy.

well if you want you can paint - i will be buying paints and what not on friday afternoon and hopefully painting my first set of 4 marines, 1 serg, 1 term librarian (NOT BRIGHT BLUE! despite what the fluff says!) Maybe just some dark blue peeling and cracking off the armor.

I have to agree with Anung Un Rama. The mottled look just doesn't look right and in my opinion doesn't say "kings". The dark look does work for me but if you want red, stay solid and go with a deep, deep red. Personally I think that either of the first two schemes looked far better.

Yes, there are female marines and my Sunhawks will explain it to you.
