I and some of my friends recently started playing AoS and decided to make use of formations for some balance. Right now I'm thinking what formation to use as a base for my army as both have great bonuses. Greenskins pros: can run and charge/shoot in the same turn, can have a warboss on a wyvern, orc boys and boar boys have better armour save, WAAAAGH is a great command ability. Bonesplittas pros: Warpaint is 5+ and can help against any wound, Foot of Gork seems better than Gaze of Mork, Savage orcs can reroll to hit if they are more than 20 and can be given bows, one additional attack on the first charge. Any thoughts on them?

I'd take the Greenskinz. Orcs have similar weapons but better saves and hit more reliably (more hits when Frenzied + re-rollable 1s). Higher overall damage potential. Being able to run and charge is another huge bonus. Orc Warboss also has the far better special abilities.

I'd have to agree. There are more positive things about the greenskinz, and the bonuses are overall better. It helps more on getting into CC, which Orcs live for. Boar boyz are also better at getting into CC because of their longer movement.

If you can't believe in yourself, believe in me! Believe in the Dakka who believes in you!

Main problem is that in general, I don't see Savage Orcs having much of an appeal. Their weaponry is pretty poor and the only saving grace is the Big Stabba.

Thats a question of prefenrence. If they are above 20 normal orcs get +1 attack, savage orcs get to reroll all to hit rolls. So I'd say they are somewhat equal in offence. In defence normal orcs can get a rorollable 5+, savage orcs only get a 6+, but warpaint allows to make up for that. I too am thinking to start with the Greenskins, but thats mainly because of the ability to take a wyvern, without it the warboss just doesn't hit hard enough and lacks in mobility. Proven agains the high elves for Island of Blood.

Having an extra attack is better than having a re-roll in this case. Orcs and Savages both hit on 4+ while Savages get an all-out re-roll compared to re-rolling 1s for Orcs as you got twice the attacks. Orcs further get re-rolls of 1 on their to-wound roll.

But that would only be if they use two choppas.

I personally am trying to find a reason to field normal boyz along with my Black Orcs, but I get more and more tempted to just run the Ironjaw warband and leave the normal gits at home, because Black Orcs seems to do what the Boyz does, but better.

You definitely want the two Choppaz
