Hello all,
I was thinking about making meadow bases for my Dark Angel army. After all, wars can be fought on pretty flowers too. I was thinking about using tufts from Army painter:
They have a little image/tutorial on how to make the base:
I might just do that but I wanted to get some opinions first. How would you make a meadow base and why?

Do what you love and love what you do. Like sell firewood. |

How would I do it? Well, I'm disinclined to buy specialist supplies when I don't need to, so I'd make my own tufts. I rigged up a static grass applicator using a mesh tea strainer, hookup wire, an alligator clip, sewing pin, and a $5 electronic fly swatter from Harbor Freight. Ugly as sin, but it works a treat. A bit of static grass from my existing stash, plus some (watery paint) dyed jute or hog hair for taller grass and I'd be in business. Finely ground foam or coarse woodworking swarf (i.e. chunky sawdust) is easy enough to color if flowers are desired.
I'd also use more grass over a darker, richer 'soil' base. The AP example shows how lovely their tufts are, but looks like two isolated chunks of green on a field of crumbled clay - not exactly my idea of a verdant meadow. Darker brown soil and more thorough coverage of short grass/flock would give a much more realistic impression, IMO.

I use those army painter ones, they're great. For a meadow, I'd mix them up with some regular tufts and maybe some red flower versions if you can find them (sure I've seen some somewhere...)
I put a few on my latest mini, here. Was going for woodland rather than meadow though:

they can yes, but send a couple of tonnes of armour through them and they wont be meadows long.. dont think meadow bases would suit anyone except maybe elves..

Personal preference and whatnot, but I've always rather liked the juxtaposition and it's not as if pretty battlefields are an impossibility. There are always the first shots fired in an area and armor doesn't roll over everything. Most people envision mud and trenches and craters and barbed wire when they picture WW1 - about as grim as you can get - but the early war was fought across lush fields and forests, not unlike what's been posted above.

I buy cheap flower tufts from ebay that are designed for model railways. Many of them are hand made meaning you can ask for a vareity of colours instead of just purchasing the single colour options they have avalable.
