Dreadclaw 69 said I should thin my paints, so this is...six coats or so? turns out I should have basecoated the pewter model first, but I've been having trouble with that. Took forever for the shiney parts to go away.
My primer is automotive spray primer, and it is pretty rough. tore up one of my brushes. I bought a box of legit citadel washes, and thats why the leather jacket doesnt suck. Buttery Comissar had a point.
Bolongesus' method for using a palette (add paint to palette, add water, mix) also saves a bunch of paint. I dont waste so much. feth yar. He also said yellow was a bear to get right, so I am holding off on finishing the next angry marine. He also mentioned that Reikland was for flesh, so that went on the face, and it looks a lot better for it.
Erik _Morkai had much to say about my detail work, so I got rid of my ink and tried the agrax, I think, and that worked a lot better.
Wire was twisted around a pen and just kinda shoved in there. plain bases look ugly, but mine are random as drek.
Thanks for all the positive comments and advice, everyone. this is actually pretty fun.

I would go with some other primer, really. That automotive stuff is not exactly a waterbased acrylic so yeah, it'll kill brushes (use synthetic brushes, proper solvents, and keep them way away from your acrylic workflow).
Army painter sprays are relatively thick but cover metal models real well, citadel spray is not as chipping-resistant on metal but goes on very thin which is good with plastics and resins where you don't need the chipping-resistance from the AP spray anyway.
You can use either Agrax Earthshade or Nuln Oil (or army painter strong or dark tone, honestly they are better now, but citadel will do) and draw a dark line where the colors meet to create some shadow. The gold band around the helmet for example would stand out and contrast way more if you did that.

Looking good! The blue on the plasma is especially spiffy.
Your neatness is damn impressive, there's folk I know who've been doing it years and aren't that precise yet.
I wouldn't have guessed you didn't prime. Your perseverance with that is past what most people would have patience for.
This guy is a Steel Legion plasma gunner from the Imperial Guard. (Astra Militarum now, because Games Workshop)
For funtime reference, two different guard regiments use gas masks - the Steel legion and the Death Korps of Krieg.
You can tell which is which because DKoK look way way more German.
If you buy a can of acrylic car primer spray for a few bucks, you can just puff it on there and after that dries it's a million times easier to paint onto the model. It gives a texture that stops the paint beading.
You can use grey, white, black, any colour really, so long as it's acrylic.

Funnily enough, the only part of them that's german that I can identify is the helmet, and even then, the ridge on top of it comes from the french helmet and their gun, their coat is french or belgian, their boots are british, the gasmask is either french or british, at least my super quick google search didn't show any german gasmasks with hose pipes.
That's for the standard trooper anyway. The Grenadiers have armor that looks like some of the german stuff with more squared out edges.
As for the OP, I feel like your paint is still pretty thick, might be my eyes deceiving me, might be related to the primer.

Cool.
To echo a previous comment spray primer might be a better bet for you. You don't want to ruin brushes during priming.

I'll be honest, I was going off the paint schemes people usually give them, which for now is when the OP would be most likely to see them (online and painted). Because the easier way in person to tell DKoK from anything else would be you know, being made of resin and costing more than a car for a platoon of them.

Good work, the finish is a lot smoother and the details a lot clearer. To echo some earlier comments maybe consider another primer, or use brush on undercoat

DKOK gasmasks are very much Russian.
