Hey Dakka, I was wondering, are tempestus scions good in a TAC imperial guard list? Would they fit in with the mentality of blob + tank support or not.
From what I understand, they are not that good, even with AP3, their shooing is only S3, and they will die to a stiff breeze because of T3, so what is their role?
maybe meltacide with a min squad with 2 meltas dropping in a killing a tank, please enlighten me.
anyways, happy wargaming,
-Mikey

DS them with meltas to take out a tank, or hide in a Vendetta for much the same thing.
They cost as much as Marines, but are half as useful.

I really want to like the scions... I've TRIED to like the scions... Tragically, they simply cost too many points for what they bring to the table.
What I do like about them:
with the dataslate thing they come in as objec sec deep strikers.
They can take hp off of monsterous creatures with snoper ap3 orders.
Command units get a lot of special weapons in one tight bundle of bs4
Not so good:
They will die. If your in range to snipe that monsterous creature then you will be charged.
4+ saves arnt terribly hard to get around.
Expensive! Cost as much as a marine, but are not equivalent to one.
Terribly short ranged. I've never fielded them and not needed them closer to whatever the big nasty things I'm hunting. Which means they die that much quicker. 18 inches isn't bad... But 9 is...
If you make them work then please post. Mine will be counts as d-99 until I find a good use for them.

Tempestus tempestus tempestus... I wish they would make an updated codex for them, with a nice cost reduction and more choice like special heavy support and stuff.

It would be better if they were dropped as a book - they're totally unnecessary, and would be better off in a 7E rewrite of the AM codex.

I love the tmepestus. SOOOOO COOOOL.
however, the special weapons suck, as a flamer or nade launcher are too anti-infanry for them, meltas are too anti-tank or TEQ, plasmas get hot, and volley guns are salvo so you are shooting at 12" with 2 S4 HSLG shots, not worth the 15 some points they cost.
sadly, I think they are not as good as I originally hoped.
I love their fluff, I love the models, but their stats leave much to be desired, I might be wrong though.

I have been playing a small 1500 list when they came out (lot of proxy and a starter pack with the Taurox, 2 squad and the codex).
At 1500, in an ''outside'' tournamenet setting, they can still do all right all alone, and be a lot of fun. I've read a blog a couple weeks ago saying how they rely heavily on their order.
A suggestion list could be something like:
Ground Assault formation
-naked Commissar
-Command squad
-3x 10man Scions (i love dual Grenade Launcher, but there is better choice I guess)
-4 Taurox
(they perfom ok if naked, but Camo-cloaking is good too)
Then you add a normal cad, with 2 Command squad and 2 min squad of scion with melta (those would Deepstrike). You can also buy another Taurox here to hide your 2 other command squad. So turn 1, that's 5 taurox on the board, with 3 command squad and 3 regular squad to give order to. After that, you pray for turn 2 Deepstrike with metla. (you can then buff them with order to maximise effectiveness)

I dont think it was clear, I meant as an elite choice for the IG codex, and not stand alone. Stand alone I think they are slightly better, however still not worth 14 PPM

They are okay if you have nothing else for backfield units for your guard. For Guard purists they are a good unit to have for larger games, on the 2000+ end of things. As if you only have a couple units of them it effects the rest of your army less at larger point values. If you have access to other imperial armies with the ability to get to the backfield, scions typically end up losing out.

well, thats why they are bad, because guard have an abundance of backfield units, they are a army, that is not super aggressive, and if you need an objective in your backfield, its probably a simple 6" move away.
