Is anyone using their movement trays in AoS?

  • Deploy on tray

  • Move

  • Charge off tray

  • (post combat) Reform on tray

  • Move

  • ...

  • I'm just wondering if it is much of a time saver for you.

I'm thinking about making some flocked cds for movement trays for aos, and will use them exactly as you describe.

Have a look at my P&M blog - currently working on Sons of Horus

I still use my old Fantasy Battle magnetized movement trays, exactly as you describe.

And I expect I will never bother rebasing all my hundreds of miniatures, either.

    He's got a mind like a steel trap. By which I mean it can only hold one idea at a time;
it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

If basing regiments of troops on 25mm round bases, I have found that the LOTR troop tray s work well. I only base larger heroes on 32 mm. Squads of cavalry and monsters can be based on 40mm trays for LOTR.

This makes movement easier and speeds up games too.

There are companies out there who make the LOTR round base troop trays out of resin, plastic and wood for cheap (the LOTR trays are pricey now).

I have not yet found it a problem and it might even be that if we see more scenery on the table - which would be a good thing that they might even become a hinderance to the flow of the game.

Lastly given how fluid formations will be you might find yourself only having trays for certain shapes which might limit your in game abilities.

I think trays might work for your general movement purposes early game, but as you close in on your opponents, you'll likely not want to use them. The free flow of unit movement is important. Using wedge formations for example can mess with your opponents pile ins so they get fewer attacks, while you get more as you get your pile ins, etc.

Using the loose formations you can also control space on the board as well that movement trays won't allow you to take advantage of.
