Hey all have been trying to make a semi- competitive list lately and have been having problems fitting everything i wanted in sso was thinking would it work if i took the drones out. I made two lists one which is Tau Empire and the other is Farsight Enclaves. Both are similar and cant seem to figure out which is better, or if even either is any good.

3 Crisis Suit Team - 171

FireBase SUpport Cadre

Also a Few questions :
1. Do Tau work without Drones?

2, My understanding is if i use the EWO to intercept i cant fire those weapons in my next shooting phase but could still use them to shoot overwatch if charged, is this correct?

For some slight information this is for playing with friends and semi-competitive tourneys in the area. unfortunatly between skitarri , spacce marines , and skyhammer the loca area has gone drop pod crazy. Any help or information would be helpful.

While I'm pretty new to Tau myself what I see from your lists is that you're talking FWs in your empire list vs a tank and an extra tetra in your enclaves list. For me this gets really into your style of play. I play empire and like using FWs, that said I'm very into the gunline and sitting back and shooting the crap out of my enemies from far away along with broadsides. I then use pathfinders for their markerlights/distraction and crisis suits to hunt down and obliterate various pests. I've mostly fought SM and have found it really effective (except for this one time vs BAs with Death Company). I could also see it being effective against horde type foes as long as you equip your xv8s with burst canons and maybe flamers. That said some people like a more assault based mech mobile style and if that's the case for you you may well prefer the enclaves list. The mobility could be nice vs the droppods you mentioned. Although I caution that I have seen enclaves guys get messed up nids/orks when they show up with a few heavy hitting units and not enough shots to slow down the numbers being thrown at them. Also, I feel like currently the Farsight Enclaves/mech style is very in and the fire warriors gunline that I prefer is on the outs. But I'm weird and like to go against the stream and also am more into the fluff and modeling than I am into actually playing the game.

As for drones... You can probably do without them but I would say take them whenever you can afford the points. Their basically like extra wounds for your unit... so if you give your crisis suits drones should the unit take a few wounds you can loose a couple drones as opposed to loosing two linked plasma rifles and a fusion blaster. I know some people also swear by marker drones as opposed to pathfinders but I've yet to try them out.

As for your intercepting/oversight rule I'm too new to really be sure.

I like your second list much more. Everything you're taking is solid.

I would change some things around though and make it look like this

Commander - 155
Dual Plasma, Stims, Talisman

Crisis team x 2 - 106
Fusion x4

Crisis team x 2 - 116
Plasma x2, EWO x2 (Commander goes here)

Crisis team x 3 - 174
Plasma x6, EWO x3

Tetra
Tetra
Tetra

Skyray
Skyray

Firebase Cadre

Riptide - 190
IA, EWO

2x3 man missilesides w/ EWO - 410

this is 1496, only thing missing is EWO on commander but it gives you 2 extra suits with fusions

Tau work fine without drones, generally they're a preference thing. they can be nice to tank some wounds for units like broad side but they can also cause morale checks. I like to run a full squad of gun drones with a buffmander funny little unit zipping around pinning people.

Also yes if you chose to intercept it means you can't fire in the next turn but may overwatch.
