Hello everyone I am looking to start AOS!

I played Tau and Grey Knights in 40k but got sick of the Math hammer (my name) and cheese.

I just need some help in starting a whole new game completely. I am very unfamiliar in Fantasy and am just wondering what all the army‘s are good at. I think that a lot of these armies look amazing! What are their strengths and weaknesses? I am looking to buy a battle box and a commander/hero to start, so any advice on what to get would be great. Any and all advice is helpful so thank you guys in advance!

Well in this game you can have any models you want and put them on the table. So it is quite literally buy whatever you want to buy and then hope your opponent has not purchased a better set of models.

My suggestion is just to play the rules for free with your current models from 40k (proxy) and then decide if you even want to play the game.

I would note that most of the armies you see on the GW site on square bases are the "old" factions.

The new factions for Age of Sigmar, so far released, are Stormcast Eternals, Khorne Bloodbound, and Sylvaneth.

Many of the old factions are going to get repackaged with round bases and change a bit or a lot, it appears. Skaven are said to have some of their plague choices repackaged to round bases this month, same with Nurgle.

Other races such as dwarfs and elves might change more dramatically. There haven't been any pictures of those two races in the books so far, so it is speculated that both, especially elves, will change quite a bit. I would probably recommend holding off on buying a starter set from one of the old elf factions right now. But it should be noted that nothing is off limits and the old models all have new rules for AoS that make any of them playable still.

The starter set with Stormcast and Khorne is hard to go wrong. It's a great deal for a lot of miniatures, and it will get you in on the ground floor with the new models and factions, plus with a balanced pair of armies to start off.

I've quite enjoyed painting the Stormcast. They seem to be a tough, elite army that hits hard, has high survivability, but perhaps less flexibility and no real fancy units yet (the flying Prosecutors are the most specialized, and they are available only in the box set).

The Khorne, as you can probably guess, are close combat specialists. In AoS, synergy between heroes and units is a big thing, and Khorne have some particularly useful characters in the box set that really bump up the effectiveness of their units.

I think it's an exciting time to get into AoS. The game just launched and it's a total reimagining of the Warhammer world. We've just gotten into the new lore and I'm liking it so far. A lot of releases are coming out to fill out the lore and modernize old armies.

Hi there!

As others have said, some...most...(We aren't sure) of the old "Square Base" armies might get a makeover with updated warscrolls. But in my opinion buy the models that look cool to you now. There is absolutely nothing stopping you from using these models even after your army gets a make-over... IF they get a make-over. Some of the Skaven models and the Tree Kin models just got a new box and some round bases, and boom! Done! So if you purchased those Tree Kin of Skaven units before AoS, you are out nothing, and don't even have to switch out your bases. Just an example there. All I'm saying is if you like the models, then buy what you like, and use them even after the update because the rules say you can.

If you need help picking an army, here is a link to the page with free copies of all the armies' free Warscrolls (Rule books). Take a look at the armies that interest you, and if you have any specific questions feel free to drop me a PM Best of luck!

If you like hoard armies skaven would fit the bill.

If you like elite grey knight type armies, then stormcast eternals fit.

If you like space marine type armies, then warriors of chaos, all elves, empire, bretonians, etc are perfect.

Most others are similar and have subtle overall differences in bravery, save, etc.

I say look at the units on the gw site under factions and go with what looks the coolest to you. Every army has powerhouse characters, monsters, average troops that can be buffed with character and unit synergy, etc.

Stormcast Eternals are great army if you like assigning specific groups to task. They operate well as independent task forces.

Khorne Bloodbound rely on a lot of synergy amoung the group. You have your expendable blood reavers, your elite shock troops the blood warriors. Then several heroes that offer lots of support spells.

Warriors of Choas are sort of piece by piece army. Choas Warriors offer a good overall unit and act as your bread and butter. Despite not having range you have a selection of pretty powerful but few Calvary units, as well as a strong selection of casters.

Overall each army has it's own strength and weaknesses. Those few are just some examples I have managed to play with.

First and foremost, thank you all for your comments, I truly appreciate each and every one!

I am not sure I am sure yet which army I will be playing yet I was just wondering what they all did and any advice. I Love the Demons and the Lizardmen they look amazing plus I believe painting them would be fun. I just don‘t want to play what everyone plays. I want to try a challenging army but I love the looks on those two.

Also I do not like the idea of putting multiple armies together. I just don‘t like that idea.

But thank you guys again on the advice!

Excellent, I think in your case, Demons in particular are clearly the best choice. They actually are really good due to a number of special rules with the current War Scrolls. Tzeentch units seem particularly attractive. The other advantage is that you can also use them in 40k games, just use the circle bases.
