I'm confused, for example, could i use the death guard reaper terminators and the salamaunder honor guard in the same army under the same banner so to speak?

Each detachment in 30k must have the same Legions astartes rule.

You can however take an Age of Darkness force org (Primary detachment) of Death guard, and then an Allied detachment of salamanders.

Just remember there is also an ally chart for 30k, and if you use a rite of war it places even more restrictions on what you can or cannot take.

HH isn't my speciality, but I believe the rules for Alpha Legion allow them to use any of the Legion-specific units.
