Hey guys! After a 2 year break and the passing of 2 editions! (wow)
I am getting back into 40k as I have much more time on my hands to play.
I want to get back into the game easily with a scaling list. I started with a base 1000 point list I drew up last night.
Most of the people I face are very friendly and there is not much competitive play.
That being said I would still like to be able to preform well.
Any pointers on the list and how I should go about scaling up would be helpful.

Wolf Lord - Thunderwolf, Frost Blade - 175

10 Grey Hunters - WGPL, 2x Plasma, Drop Pod - 234

10 Grey Hunters - WGPL, 2x Plasma, Drop Pod - 234

Murderfang - Drop Pod - 170

3x Thunderwolves - 3x Storm Shields, 1x Thunder Hammer - 195

Overall 1008

Or

HQ

Wolf Guard Battle Leader: 160pts
Runic Armour, Powerfist, Storm Shield, Thunderwolf Mount

Elite:

Murderfang - Drop Pod - 170

Lone Wolf: 80pts
Terminator Armour, Thunder Hammer, Storm Shield, Melta Bombs

Troops:

Grey Hunters:
Melta gun, 7 Close Combat Weapons, 3 Extra Grey Hunters, Wolf Guard Pack
Leader upgrade, Terminator Armour, Storm Shield, Combi-Melta.
Drop Pod
191pts

10x Grey Hunters:
2 Plasma guns
Drop Pod
205pts

Fast Attack:
3x Thunderwolves - 3x Storm Shields, 1x Thunder Hammer - 195

1001pts

Things to remember when making scaling suggestions
1. My thunder Cav is low numbers (Like Cave Star Numbers)
2. I have every character except The new Dreds and the New character models released since 5.5.
3. I have no Flyers
4. I have 5 rhinos
5. I have 7-8 Drop pods (Only 4 are painted atm.) Working on that now.
6. I have 3 units of Long Fang ML's
7. I have 2 LR's One Crusader and one Standard (Both with MM)
8. 3 Land Speeders
9. Enough Terminators to field 2 Logan wings if I wanted to. But not many of them have combi weapons as it was hard to find the bits at the time and time was hard to find as well.
10. Greyhunters... I have plenty
11. I DO NOT HAVE Skyclaws, or Swiftclaws.

If you can find a way to squeeze out some points for a squad of LF’s 4ML 1 LC I think you would be set. Your WGBL you probably don’t need, I like the second list better. You have murderfang potentially dropping behind enemy lines causing havoc and your TWC rushing up with your rhino squad. The only thing that could help prevent murderfang from getting popped on turn two though could be some supporting fire from a LF squad. Otherwise it’s a very solid list. Welcome back to the fang brother!

He is a TW Wolflord. But he is also vital in damage dealing.
What would I replace him with?
Long Fangs in razorback?

Nope, just park a squad of long fangs in the back of your deployment zone. Kit them with 4 Missile Launchers and 1 Lascannon. While our Long Fangs aren’t what they were in 6th edition they are still very strong. If you’re worried about survivability you can give the squad leader a shield and stick him in front to soak shots and even look out sir. In the higher point games I tend to bring two of these squads and remember you can split fire with one guy which is why I only bring one Lascannon.

So, does murderfang count as an HQ? I just dont know how I am going to wedge a LF pack in without having to drop my TWL. He is the hardest hitting unit in the list when with his buddies.

And I could go bog standard on the packs of GH but that leaves me with little anti armor

I like that last list a lot.

A couple thoughts...

Murderfang is an Elite, not an HQ.

They may already be built, so it may be moot, but you shouldn't need that many Storm Shields on your cav models. 1 SS for every 2 models is a pretty good rule of thumb, these days. Since one TWC model is always a Character, now, and the Wolf Guard Pack Leader is an Independent Character, use of Look Out, Sir! makes the extra SSs a waste of points. Any wounds that need saving can be put almost wherever you want them to go, now.

As the core to a scaling army, I'd drop the 2 Plasma guns and use either Flamers or no special weapons at all for the 2nd Grey Hunter unit. Add in more special weapons for larger lists.

Also, Blood Claws are much more viable than they used to be - they no longer have the Special Rule that makes them lose control, and they're cheaper. Grey Hunters are the only things in the newest Codex that didn't take a serious drop in points. Putting a Wolf Priest in with a squad of Blood Claws is worth considering; they'll get FNP 6+ and Preferred Enemy.

You could also ditch the WGBL in the TWC unit and use a Rune Priest in a small Long Fang squad, too. I agree with the other poster who mentioned Murderfang's going to be a target of priority and may get popped quickly without some long-range heavy support picking off targets of opportunity. The Rune Priest still benefits from Split Fire, going Tempestas Discipline means he can always fall back on Living Lightning as the Primaris Power, and Storm Caller can give the LFs a little cover, if they need it. He's and IC, and the LF Ancient is a Character, so, again, wound allocation becomes easier on you.

If you go either of those two routes (Wolf Priest w/ BCs or RP w/ LFs), you could also save points by ditching the WGPL in the GH unit and just run GHs w/ 2 Meltaguns.
