With the seemingly constant trend towards better MCs, is there still sufficient need to take some kind of deep striking or fast moving melta unit to bust heavy armor?

Take a melta unit and a grav unit in drop pods. If they have a Land Raider, drop the melta first and reserve the grav. If they have a nasty MC, drop the grav first.

Well, if you fought the list I'm working on and didn't bring melta, you could expect a 7" cover ignoring plasma pie plate each turn that grav can't do anything about.

I'm guessing that's some sort of fortification.

Wouldn't a handful of melta bombs spread throughout likely be sufficient?

You'd have to get there.

Your probably right about the fortification, but that's also available via forge world in the typhon heavy siege tank, but that can ignore melta so that's a moot point.

While there are a lot of MCs that need to be killed, there are still plenty of things with armor value that need a little of the melta loving. I’m not cutting any out of my lists just yet.

Yeah, plasma obliterator. Like all builds it will fold to meltas, totally immune to grav and S7 fire.

So I'm hearing that nothing really changed.

A TAC list still needs a mix of anti-tank, anti-mc and anti-infantry.

Grav just gives advantages & disadvantages compared to plasma and to a lesser extent, melta.

Yeah, to a large extent grav outdoes plasma at the things it was good at, while melta is more niche, but when you don't have it at all, it could suck.
