Subject: How do outside forces strike in a challenge?

Recently I ran into a problem with this. I play orks and someone challenged my squad. I didn't want my pks to die so I tossed the mek under the bus. Now they just had a single model in the fight. I thought that since wounds can be allocated to challengers if there is no one else in the combat that my outside guys could strike. It was argued that the book says only wounds can be allocated and not attacks. If this was something that might never happen in one of the local tournaments I wouldn't be concerned. Sadly the guy who was asked is the organizer who does the final call for the tournaments and he ruled that while wounds can be allocated you can't attack if there is nobody else left in the unit. This doesn't seem to make sense to me so I was wondering if you guys could clear it up. I figure that it has been answered before but I cant find it on my phone and I can't connect with a computer right now.

The rules for challenges aren't a whole new rule set, its a modification of the normal combat rules. So since the only things challenges talks about is how you allocate wounds the only thing it changes is how you allocate wounds. Thus how you roll to hit is completely unaffected so you follow normal rules which is "unit rolls to hit against an enemy unit".

I know it doesn't change how you roll to hit. The issue I ran into was that it says you can allocate wounds to the model. They took that as if wounds spill over from the squad then it can do damage which is correct. Then they went on to say that if you don't have a squad then everyone sits there and watches because it say you can allocate wounds not attacks or something like that. Ir was rules in favor of the it says wounds not attacks so you can't attack that day. Automatically Appended Next Post: Thanks though for the reply stating that you can attack then though.

In Sixth Edition there was a Rule where the Models 'stood around watching' the Challenge but it was removed for 7th Edition. There is no longer a Restriction that prevents the Models outside of a Challenge from generate Wounds, so they still generate Wounds following the normal method. Outside Forces only Restricts how these Wounds are Allocated, creating a specific order starting with the closest Model outside of the Challenge and ending with the Model inside the Challenge. If there are no Enemy Models outside of the Challenge to be Allocated to, there is nothing preventing these Wounds from now being Allocated to the Model within the Challenge.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures. |

You still get your attacks from all models within 3" of the your mek. If the challenge was placed properly, according to the rules, you likely had several models who could swing, creating wounds, which are then allocated.
Unfortunately, the TO was wrong.
