What do you think is the most competitive assault based army?

Bonus Question: What is the most fun assault based army to play?

Orks is the most fun.

As for most competitive, that would be tough. Daemons are good, but I might call them more of a psychic army than an assault army.

Tyranids are also heavy on psychic but they are also very strong in shooting. They have the MCs to assault, but when people keep them flying around and shooting, then there isn't too much assault going on.

Space Wolves have some of the scariest assault units in the game. So they might be up there.

Imperial Knights have to be one of the most competitive. Not exactly the most fun mind.

SPACE WOLVES...most competitive.

Gray knights - most fun.

Khorne Daemonkin; those and Daemons are the only ones up to Space Marine/Necron/AD Mech power level

Khorne Daemonkin is terribad imo.

Edit: aside from a few builds such as khorndog/bike formation and maulerfield/soulgrinder spam.

I tried to assault vs assault Khorne Daemonkin.

The bloodthirster with Str D weapons was amazing! but the other dread killed half of his army, including his warlord.

Actually this combat was in a huge 20,000 point apocalypse game with a few other armies, so I couldn't exactly tell you who came out ahead.

Daemons with Be'Lakor are superb. Flesh hounds, screamers, soul grinders, blood slaughteres, daemon princes and greater daemons are all very useful units. Top it all off with some back field summoning and you are good to go. Toss grimoire in there for extra shenanigans. Grimoire one unit, invisible another. Be'lakor does shrouded near some screamers and everybody gets a +2 jink save.

SW with a good amount of TWC are great.

Necrons can do surprisingly well thanks to resilience and ease of deathstar. Wraiths, lychguard and flayed ones are all pretty awesome at what they do, however as a 100% assault army, I think they would fall flat against daemons and TWC.

Daemons.

Just regular daemons. In a straight up manfight, Daemonkin can't hold it's own against a grimoire\imvisibility spam daemon assault list.

Daemonkin the ability to buff units as stuff dies is great. Trust me by turn 2/3 you will be generating alot of tithe points not the most flexible army in the world but if it gets in combat with you its gonna hurt. We can have some seriously nasty units and even our mediocre units are atleast usable imho

12 Orks with nob+powerklaw in Big Trakks would work of you take enough of them.

Ork Greentide formation. Having half a dozen PKs buried within helps dramatically and the Ork Bully Boyz formation will take down anything in melee if they reach the target.

QFT, pure TWC assault can be brutal.

Necrons. They're just too tough. Wraiths can bring the speed for them. Plenty of ap2 and rerolls too.

Definitely NOT Daemonkin. I'd like to think I'm a pretty decent competitive player but I have not been able to make it happen with Daemonkin, try as I might.

I'd have to agree with the Space Wolves sentiment, if not only for the utter dominance of Thunderwolves.

At the same time, Eldar can be brutal with 3 S D wraithknights.
