I have a pair of sandals that I enjoy wearing during the Summer, but they've gotten smelly now does anyone have any advice on cleaning them as I've briefly washed them with soapy water and a sponge which got rid of the grime but not the smell, should I soak them so it goes deeper than surface level?

Wash, Baking soda, wash and then sun bake.

Should clear the smell.

I hear vinegar works but baking soda does for me. Alternatively you can leave your sandals outside overnight with a baking soda coating.

Same way you get the stink out of a sponge.

I'm shocked you got a pair to last more than a year. I always wear my thongs (that's flip flops in bizarro land)/sandals out before the end of the summer.

I had a pair of boots that got a horrid funk from something and it took several full washes in a sink with several cleaning chemicals and then a few nights out side with carpet fresh powder inside to do it. You might have to go with the nuclear option too.

TBH I'm sort of glad to see it. Up until recently, I only ever threw out/replaced sneakers when they were worn, but about a year ago I had a pair of sneakers that smelled pretty rank, despite never wearing them without socks. Not typically a problem I have. I tried running them through the washing machine, no luck, repeated that, they still smelled, I gave up and bought a new pair.

So I read this thread with some interest to see how other people tackle this.

frabreeze maybe? I use it on my ballistic vest carrier and helps in between washings.

I suspect that a quick spell on google would have been more productive than a thread here...
