Hello mini war game players,
I'm the Proverbial Topaz Fist, and I'm super stoked to start a new hobby.
I was given a few unpainted oldschool DnD metal minis as a Christmas present by a distant Uncle. I had an old unfinished model plane with a cheap fiskars paint set and cheap fiskars plastic-bristle brushes, and I painted those minis.... and was flabbergasted by how much I enjoyed it.
Several months later, I began reading 40k fluff. As a huge sci-fi geek, I was pretty much swept off my feet. I decided to try the game out, but, as you know, it's pretty shockingly expensive when you first get started. Beyond this, I wasn't even sure if I'd like assembling the models. I did Gundam snap-together models when I was a kid, but I never managed to finish anything that needed glue. What if I dumped money for rulebooks and paint and models and all the incidentals- and I hated glue models? What if I found it tedious and miserable, and I was out like $500 like GW says you should be when "getting started"?
Well I bit the bullet about three weeks ago and walked into my local GW store. I decided to buy a set of troops, build them up, and- if I liked the modeling part of the hobby- I'd move on to learning the game. I already know I'd love playing the game and reading the fluff and painting the minis, so if the modeling was fun too 40k would be a match made in heaven.
Today I finished my last perfect little Ork Boy. And guess what? I loved every second of assembling them. I'm going to build a Bad Moonz themed army, and I'm very excited.

Where do I direct questions about boreing out slugga barrels?
Where do I look for tips on getting rid of the nubbins left over from sprue?
Where would I pose a question about buying a dark vengeance rulebook v.s. a full rulebook for getting started on my army list?
Why are my images upside-down?

Welcome welcome! There is an excellent section of the forum devoted to the painting and modeling aspect of the hobby further below. There, you can get some neato tips and tricks, check out some inspiring work, or share your own!

a thing I do with pics when they seem to load funny is that I'll rotate the original on my computer 90 degrees to the left or right (depending on how its twisting around when I load it), then I rotate it back. Somehow that has helped the pic to load properly when I try again. For yours that seems to be upside down... try rotating 90... rotating 90 again (a full 180 I guess)... then rotate all the way back... see if that works.

again... WELCOME!

Hi. Welcome to Dakka Dakka

TheEyeOfNight- I swear, this thread is 70% smack talk, 20% RP organization, and 10% butt jokes
TheEyeOfNight- "Ordo Xenos reports that the Necrons have attained democracy, kamikaze tendencies, and nuclear fission. It's all tits up, sir."
Space Marine flyers are shaped for the greatest possible air resistance so that the air may never defeat the SPACE MARINES!
Sternguard though, those guys are all about kicking ass. They'd chew bubble gum as well, but bubble gum is heretical. Only tau chew gum
