In the warp, searching for Marbo

Had a stupid thought; what if instead of using points(or wounds) to determine what you can bring to a fight...you used the model's monetary price?

A $1000 vs $1000 game!

Just imagine if people everywhere started playing like that. It's be so stupid(and possibly interesting)! Also, perhaps it would encourage GW to lower their prices so you'd buy more?

What do you guys think?

Interesting concept. There was a running series of articles in WD a while ago where four guys had a monthly budget and you watched them build their armies, was interesting.

Some armies, obviously, are going to do better then others. And it would affect the mix of what’s worth fielding.

How would you count conversions? If I only use part of a box, do I count the whole thing? Everything at modern prices, or what I payed at the time? I’ve got RTB01 marines, 30 guys for $20. Discounts or bundle deals?

Obviously, there'd be a great deal many flaws with this idea, but the idea hit me, and I just wanted to hear Dakka's thoughts.

I'd love to be able to read some of those articles you mentioned.

I just liked the thought of seeing the usefulness of a model, compared to it's real world cost.

at least it looks nice... unfortunately this style of play will only lead to 'playing for keeps'

Someone pointed this out for AoS, that price is as good a balancing factor as wounds are when making 'lists'.

I think an interesting idea. What if GW priced things based on points then? Perhaps prices are already close to this though...

There are too many problems; kitbashing, mixtures (my LatD are a mix of Catachans, Marauders, and IG), FW, third party models, price increases due to inflation (10 RT marines cost 10£, now it's 25£ ofor 10 with more bitz), price conversions (£ to NOK has changed horribly for me and would lose me 20% of my army) etc.

Even if points are flawed, it beats currency-based prices.

GW's pricing MO is to price increase new releases (sometimes by 20%+), and leave old boxes with their old prices. Basically, new / upgraded boxes bear the entire burden of the price increases -- which makes lots of sense from a seller's perspective (to recoup costs and maximize revenue), and even lots of sense from a modelling perspective (since the new kits are fancier), but no sense at all from a gaming perspective.

As mentioned previously in the thread...

Sisters player spends $1000... can field 500 points of models.

IG player spends $1000... can field 3500 points of models.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

The price that you pay for it, or the price listed at GW? Because I don't think we would ever see Mek Gun on the field lol
