GW's rotund Mongolian eat monsters and Mantics gloryhound mercenaries don't have so much in common as orcs, gobbos, dwarves and elves do crossing over from GW to Mantica.

I'm about to buy some bits to see what Mantica ogres look like in belly plates, and GW's with blunderbusses. Any opinions/warnings from people who've already tried mixing the two? Mostly looking to keep it simple and mix heads and hand weapons. Little worried the GW heads are going to be oversized, but maybe sword hands and ironfists match up ok?

I've never seen the two mixed but I'm not convinced it will work too well.

Actually, if it helps, I did use a GW Orc head on a Mantic ogre which was the right size.

GW Orc arms work really well on Mantic Ogre bodies. GW are heroic proportion, Mantic are more on the average/appropriate side (minus the idea of big upper bodies with smaller legs on things like trolls).

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

With some care to your choices, GW Ogre heads work on Mantic Ogre bodies. Mostly because of the Johnny Bravo proportions of the Mantic ones. You still need to choose carefully, though. Mantic ones won't work on the GW Bodies though (at least not to my own aesthetic preferences). I do agree on the GW Orc arms working well with Mantic bodies, as well.

I've only used them on unit leader heads so far. (just the two above, as I've only painted 12 mantic ogres so far). My issue is I actively dislike most of the Mantic Ogre heads anyway, but even with the 3? 4? 6? you get, I wanted more variety. I've got a few other GW heads selected in a little baggie to be used for more Mantic Ogre units down the line.

Urgh... now I am picturing Mantic's studio ogres with the skulls painted on their faces yelling 'Witness me!' like a character in Mad Max....

The Auld Grump... which kind of works, I think....

The reason I bought rules and became a real wargamer was because I wanted a properly thought out structure to govern the action instead of just making things up as I went along.
