there are 10 chaos gods right?
Theres the obvious tzeentch, khorne, slaanesh, and nurgle, but there is also Malal, Necoho, Zuvassin, Ans'l, Mo'rcck, Phraz-Etar, right?
am I missing something.
also, what are the warbands (if any) worshiping Malal or Necoho?
and are there any novels discussing the renegade gods in great detail? I think the renegade gods are a lot cooler than the base gods, and would like some addition info.
thanks!

We. don't. speak. of the rebel god around here.
And AFAIK the other minor gods never appeared in 40K fluff.
The Horned Rat and Hashut are also Gods of Chaos in the Warhammer universe, but they never appeared in 40K.

Malal, everyone's favorite renegade Chaos god trying to destroy Chaos, was first invented for a comic that ran in White Dwarf waaay back in the day about a character named Kaleb Daark who was a champion of Malal. You can find a large portion of it online.
The reason GW hasn't done anything with Malal for a long time is because the guy who made the comic has legal ownership of all his original creations in it. There were a few other sources written about Malal at the time though. If I recall, Malal prefers to have a few very strong champions rather than a large number of followers. There's the Sons of Malice CSM warband, but they worship a being called Malice, who's probably a daemon, not a god. Definitely not Malal, even though they sport his colors (black and white) and his schtick (Chaos hating Chaos, and everything else, but Chaos especially). Because copyright.
Necoho and Zuvassin were both created for the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay supplement "Something Rotten in Kislev," which you can also find a pdf of online. (I'm not gonna link it here, cause I'm not sure how legal it is.) This is the only canon source that goes into both gods in any detail, and it's still pretty scant, especially for Necoho. All other mentions in more recent material (such as the Tomb of Salvation) are pretty much just name drops.
Fun fact, Necoho and Zuvassin were actually created because the author of that supplement couldn't use Malal (see copyright issues above).
Anyway, Necoho has very few followers, which is how he wants it, being the god of Atheism and all. The closest thing he has to a warband is the Cult of Ancient Allies in the Something Rotten in Kislev supplement. The Cult worships both Necoho and Zuvassin, in an unholy pact to protect them from Chaos Warriors from up north. Necoho followers mostly just work to undermine the faith of anyone else.
Zuvassin the Undoer (a sort of reverse Tzeentch, the god of wrecking plans) has the most potential of the two to have other warbands, and their even hinted at in Something Rotten in Kislev, but the only named one is the Cult of Ancient Allies. Zuvassin's followers also tend to have things blow up in their faces, due to his nature, so their warbands would generally be small and short lived.
Ans'l, Mo'rcck, and Phraz-Etar are from the more comedic days of GW. The only thing known about them is that CSM's honor them by putting spikes on their armour. Seriously. Also, their names are puns on Bryan Ansell, Michael Moorcock, and Frank Frazetta.
That about sums it up. I do wish GW would do a little more with the minor Chaos Gods. There's a lot of story potential there.

There is a lot of potential there. The thing is, it's left as potential, for you to work with. Like the missing Legions, or all the Space Marine Chapters which never get any mention in the published background.

There are probably a lot of Gods that have come and gone. like the Chaos gods certain times can create new ones from disturbances in the warp, gaining power. But as the God is forgotten or what turmoil bought them to sentience is overcome they fade out of existence.
The Chaos Gods differ from all others because they no longer rely upon worship to stay put. True, they need worship to gain strength, but they won't fade and disappear like the lesser entities.
From the Chaos 3.5 dex P6
Sometimes these concentration coalesce into entities that draw their power from the expression of certain emotions in real - space. Many such beings are said to exist within the Warp, some only for short time as the passion associated with their creation passes.

so theres is not really anything besides one or two stories. That really sucks.
still, thanks for the insight. They are all really cool, and I will probably just create my own warband if I ever decide to do chaos.
@fallinq -
I just googled it, and the sons of malice worship malal. I guess malice is another name for him.

Don't take your information from 40k wiki. It is unsourced and much of it is just headcanon made up by fans. Try Lexicanum instead, it is (somewhat) more reliable because a lot of information is sourced: http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Sons_of_Malice Malal only exists in WHFB. Fans just mash the two names together because they have a lot of the same attributes. But Malal is never mentioned in 40k. The Sons of Malice worship an entity known as Malice, not Malal. Also, Malice is only mentioned in one single story, so there is little information.

40K doesn't have Malal because, as previously mentioned, GW doesn't own the copyright to the character. Thus, Malal was replaced by Malice.
Malal isn't even mentioned in recent WHF sources, either, for the same reason. Last I knew, Something Rotten in Kislev was the last place Malal made an appearance by name.

There are 8, one for each arrow of the Star. I'd reckon The Big Four are the most powerful, with the others orbiting them. I think the among the remaining 4 could be Malice and the Raptor God.
