I dunno if I should or not.

FFG have made an amazing way of making money by getting us addicted to the plastic crack.

Yes.

I have multiples of every ship except the large base ships and the huge ships. I will eventually get doubles of the large base ships (especially the Aggressor), but it isn't too high on my priority list right now.

Other than wanting multiple copies of each ship for my own list building and card collecting, I like having enough ships to field at least two decent lists for teaching people how to play.

And some, I assume, are good people."

It can be a good idea to have one of every ship eventually. Its the most cost efficient way to have all the upgrades available for list building. But beg/borrow/proxy first to work out what suits you and how you write lists then only actually commit to purchasing the expansions that work for you.

Plus, even if you only want to play one faction, it can be very useful to have multiple factions to draw in other players.

Depends on how serious you are about it. If you're only ever going to play casually (so don't need official cards), I think there's a real argument to just print upgrades you like off of FFG's various online resources if a ship has nice upgrades but you're not interested in the faction/ship/not interested in dropping another $15+ on something you haven't played just for a few cards.

X-wing is a game with lists you build ahead of time, so having a few lists I think is plenty, since it's not like you'll be missing the perfect piece once you see some scenario (instead, just not building towards that piece).

I only own a few ships and if your into casual play it fine. I even enter my few ships into local tournaments but don't do so well compared to the guys who own every upgrade card. If you getting into the tournament play your going to have to own a few of every ship if you want to be competive. Sometimes a search on eBay will find the cards your looking for but for some of the prices your better off buying the ship new

I think it would be better to pick a ship you like, and then find the upgrades for it, preferably from the faction you like the most.

Sadly, there are no empire ships with engine upgrade...:(

In for a penny, in for a pound.
I'm pretty much set on buying 2 of each small bases ships, and one of each large bases ship. From there I buy multiples of ships that I really want to build a specific build. For example, I have 3 of the Aggressor because I want to run 3 in the occasional Epic game and I wanted 6 Feedback Array.

No. Don't try and turn what could be a fairly inexpensive hobby into an expensive one.

Buy the ships you want to use. If you're not playing in official tournaments, you don't even need the actual cards, you can just play with the printouts from the various online builders.

Even if you do want to play in tournaments I dare say that "handicapping" yourself with a smaller card pool will actually make you a better player. A great deal of this game is manoeuvering rather than building.

I actually started with a base of four, but am building towards 12 of each for most of the small base ships...

That said I play mostly casual games and we go huge.

I would say!
Epic play currently has a limit of 12 of each small based ship and 8 of each large based ship.

I own two of every ship (minimum).

This was partly because "mistakes were made" and partly because I wanted enough ships to demonstrate the game to others (letting them basically design any list they wanted without constraints).

Except B-Wings. Don't buy B-wings because I can't find them and they're my favorite...um...I mean, they're terrible.
