Psychic Prisoner aboard a Black Ship
|
(sorry if this is in the wrong area)
I'm new to Warhammer, and I plan on having a GK army. I'm gonna do a 1500 point army, though I'm struggling with what I should use.
Currently I have down:
Strike Squad x 10 troops, 2 Psycannon's, master crafted, then regular weapons. 250 points.
Terminator Squad x 10 troops, 2 Psycannon's, 3 Halberds, 2 Daemon hammers, digital weapon, and master craft. 416 points.
Dreadnought, Venerable, Lascannon, Extra armour. 185 points.
Castellan Crowe. 175 points.
That would leave 474 points, and I worked out a Dreadknight which would take it to 299 points left. I dunno much about army building, but this doesn't seem like it would be cost effective or be an effective army. Help would be appreciated a lot

Before I tell you this, I want to make it clear that this is your army and you can do whatever you friggin like. Just because everyone does it one way doesn't mean you have to follow the crowd.
Grey Knight players usually run their lists one way. Terminator Librarian or Draigo, five Terminators with one Psycannon and CCWs to taste, all in a Stormraven, and one Dreadknight with Teleporter, Psycannon and Incinerator. Repeat to get to the desired points limit.
It would be nice to see other Grey Knight builds, but people do run this for a reason. It maximizes the usefullness of an elite army and can be null deployed. They start the game with zero models on the table. They have that Detachment to roll for reserves on Turn 1.

Thanks for the reply so quickly. The second one seems like those guys lose a lot of friends XD
I don't really mind losing, it's all in good fun, but if what I've said there is complete rubbish, i'd rather do something else. I guess I wont know till I play, and even then I'll most likely lose the first few times being i'm new.
Also as a note, I don't have those units, I have the strike squad though, but everything else is just what I've written down as an idea for an army I could build.

My list:
HQ
Librarian with Mastery level 3, book, hammer, storm bolter
Troops
2x 5 man Strike Squads with 1 Psycannon
1x 5 man Strike Squad with Incinerator and hammer
Fast Attack
Interceptors with 1 Incinerator+1 hammer per 5
Heavy Support
Dreadknight (2 ranged weapons, Personal Teleporter)
Lord of War
Draigo
Sometimes I include Crowe and a unit or 2 of Purifiers, but my general list builds off of that formula. It's a little different from the traditional list (in that I don't make a death star and use Strike Squads in stead of Terminators)
Basic idea is to use the Nemesis Strike Force, join Draigo and the Libby to a unit, and hold everything but the Interceptors and Dreadknight in reserves. Turn 1, a bunch of guys drop down and hopefully get good shots off, and if the situation calls for it the Dreadknights and Interceptors shunt forward to focus on a flank. if my Deep Strikes weren't that good, I will just re-position my guys a little and save the teleport-move for later.
Draigo always stands towards the enemy, shielding the Librarian who is unleashing psychic mayhem on the enemy.
There are a lot of flaws with this list, but the general style is different from the "Librarian, Min Terminators, Max Dreadknights" approach and generally leads to fun and close games. It's a little frustrating to have the game decided by a random die roll, though (oh, that 3rd unit of Strikers scattered off board and went to rolling reserves for the rest of the game, instead of landing and finishing off that last wound on the enemy warlord who proceeded to tear a path singlehandedly through the rest of your squads? better luck next game)
As for your actual list: Dreadnoughts are not good. Venerable is not worth the points. I would not recommend taking that Dreadnought at all, or if you do drop Venerable and try to keep it as cheap as possible. A Dreadnought with 2x Twin-linked Autocannons is decent ranged support and gives you more Warp Charge dice, so that's not too bad of a way to spend points.
Crowe, being my favorite character in all of 40k and the first model I ever purchased, obviously HAS to suck... He's interesting, and way better than his previous incarnation, but I wouldn't actually use him unless it is specifically a themed game (never for pick up games, not in a tournament were I ever to go to one. Only if we both decided we wanted a game with Crowe in it and planned our lists for the ensuing battle... basically making our lists focus on the duel between HQs). A Librarian is a MUCH better way to spend points (with my set up, it is 5 points less than Crowe and gives SO much more to the army).
If you are new to Warhammer, I would suggest:
1 Librarian
5 Terminators
10 Strike Squad (since you already have it)
A Dreadknight
a 2x Auto-cannon dreadnought
This should get you about 1000 points, if my memory serves correctly. Add, to your preference: Interceptors, Purifiers, more Terminators, a Grand Master.
Hope that rambling reply gave some sort of help.

You don't have to go total null deployment, I like having 1-2 dreadknights starting on the tables to teleport forward. I would also recommend changing your strike squad to a purifier squad (just better all around) and splitting your terminator squad into 2x 5-man squads. A large termy squad is scary but it's a lot eggs in on basket. Especially in an army that's already so high in point.

He's been ferried through hell on a ship that's ten thousand years old to some godforsaken, war-torn rock; He is one of ten million men snatched from his home to fight a war he barely understands; He wages war against devouring hiveminds, ravenous demons and hordes of hyper-advanced aliens with strange technologies and sorceries he never dreamed existed; no one will remember his sacrifice, there will be no records of his deeds, no glorious parades in his honor, and no remembrance of his name. All he will earn is a shallow, unmarked grave on a forgotten world untold lightyears from home.
Yet for all this thankless sacrifice a Guardsman is a man, just like you. He has no millennia-old genetic engineering, no prophetic leader, no miracles of faith. He has his lasgun, his orders, and those beside him. He is the Imperial Guard.
And he will hold the line.

Okay, I have all of this down. But what I'm getting is Crowe and Venerable's would serve much better as decorations than as part of an army
I think I'm going to a Games Workshop after my college interview next week, so I'll probably pop in there and pick up a box of 5 terminators and possibly a Dreadknight. I'll have to order the HQ online though, as last time I went they had no GK HQ's at all.

At 1500, I run:
Libby
10 GKT
5 Interceptors
2 DreadKnights
Draigo
It's fun, fast, and functional.

I'm kind of in the same boat, I got some Grey Knights for cheap and basically just went nuts with what I like model wise :-)
So I have roughly 2,300 points
Draigo
Libby, storm bolter, level 3
Dreadknight, personal teleporter, Incinerator, sword
Dreadknight, Personal teleporter, psycannon, incinerator
StormRaven, lascannons, multi melta
5 Paladins, Apoth, psycannonx2, Halberds
5 Paladins, Apoth, psycannonx2, halberds
Purifiers, halberds, 2x Incinerators
Purifiers, halberds, 2x incinerators
terminators, psycannon, swords Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh and a ten man strike squad but don't know how to arm them?

Devestating Grey Knight Dreadknight

Just FYI, there is no specific "GK Librarian" model, we just use the space marine one in terminator armor and mod/paint appropriately.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment. |

You could also use one of the terminators from the GK termie/paladin box if you don't want to shell out $33 or whatever for a single miniature (or buy the finecast one *shudder*) There's plenty of bits there for it, and if you need more book-related bits you can probably find them on ebay.
Then again your army is going to consist of 20-30 miniatures tops so you don't have to be too thrifty.
Two dreadknights are good at 1000 points and necessary at 1500. I would use Draigo if I used unique characters, and I worry that I'm shooting myself in the foot by not doing so.
My opinion is that interceptors, terminators, librarians and dreadknights are the only units worth taking. Purifiers, paladins, land raiders and storm ravens are acceptable for flavor, but not points-efficient. Everything else is just bad.
If you use strike squads then it's probably best to leave them naked except for an incinerator and deep strike them. As long as you use hammerhand, halberds won't make much of a difference.
