I just participated in a competitive event and the Tyranid lists I saw at the top tables were going very monster heavy (basically no gaunts) and taking rippers as troop choices. Among them were a few Lichtors as well as Mawlocs. These were all taken over different detachments (CAD and Leviathan Detachment). They also used spore mine clusters.

Unfortunately I could not tell you the exact upgrades he took (EDIT: Besides making the Hive Tyrants fly of course) but that would be the general guideline I would go by if you are looking to be competitive.

My understanding is that competitive lists involve as many Hive Tyrants (2 x TL Devourer, Wings, Electrogrubs) as you can field, a few minimum squads of Rippers (Tunnelling) and some Mawlocs. Lictors optional to help to Mawlocs out.

Order of the Ebon Chalice, 2,624pts
Officio Assassinorum, 570pts
Hive Fleet Viracocha, 3,673pts
562pts

To some extent ...this is true. But your personal "style" does modify the "perfect" list. But for 2000 points you'll want four or five Tyrants.

Depending on the foe, and the mission, you might want some table presence though.

The will of the hive is always the same: HUNGER

If you want to use gaunts, I'd say you go for the Endless swarm formation (3 Brood of hormagaunts, 3 broods of termagants, and 1 brood of warrior). When a unit of horma or terma is destroyed, you roll a D6, on 4+ you put a unit exactly as the one destroyed (same ups if they had) on Ongoing Reserves, and also, add some Trygons, so the units in ongoing reserves, can arrive via their tunnels (behind their units).
The recommendation is to use units of 10, so they die quickly and come back. Use mucolid or Rippers for the unit slot for the CAD

Drop some zoans (2 Zoan and 1 Neur are more than enough).

Maybe one less carni if you need some more points for the trygons (I'd like to use 2 trygons, maybe one a Prime)

If you're looking to scale Tyranids up to 11 without stacking maximum Flyrants, consider utilizing Forgeworld. It's much more smiled upon than it used to be, and a Barbed Heirodule (sp?) or a Malanthrope can go a long way.

The most competitive lists tyranids always contain 5 flyrants especially at 2000 points you can take 5 I believe in a 1850 list. So if you take 1 CAD and a leviathan detachment that's HQ choices and a maximum of 11 troops I believe and a minimum of 3 or 4. Mucolid spores are a new favourite 15 points each, count as 1 troop choice and has objective secured. 3 mucolid spores costs 45 points, 5 flyrants fully upgraded 1200 points that's 755 points left to spend on big bugs

Mucolids cannot capture objectives but Adam_1994 makes a good point about a solid nid list. Pretty fool proof and relatively straight forward to play. You may get bored of playing 5 flyrants, I know I did.

They may technically have OBSec if you take them in a CAD, but they are not scoring so it does not matter (see Living Bomb).

But yes you can spam a bunch of 15 point nonscoring troops and take 5 flyrants...until you can't... or the TOs start utilizing missions with reactive objectives that your flyrants cannot hold while they zoom around killing stuff.

Sorry I thought they could but there is also rumors that if tournaments allow duplicate CAD's then you may take upto 7 flyrants

Exactly leaving 285 points spare so if you wanted some gaunts, venomthropes, zoanthropes, lictors and mawloc. Or gargoyles with tyranids 285 points can get you a rather good amount of models on the board

You probably want minimum squads of your little guys. TFC and Whirlwinds love blobs.
