Just got a new airbrush and compressor to replace ones I had not used in many years and had donated to a teacher I know who ran a wargame club at the middle school he taught at. I had not painted WW2 stuff bigger than 15mm in darned near 15 years. I recently started looking at some 28mm WW2 stuff for use in Bolt Action and/or Chain Of Command. I got some US and German forces and over the last couple of weeks have started to build and paint the US vehicles I have.

Here are a couple WIP pictures after putting on a base coat and a bit of highlight with the new airbrush:

My old airbrush was a single action model, the new is double action and I had to climb a bit of a learning curve (who am I kidding, I still have a lot of climbing to do).

I'll be painting details and weathering over the next few days (or couple of weeks). I'll update to this topic as I do so.

Sternguard though, those guys are all about kicking ass. They'd chew bubble gum as well, but bubble gum is heretical. Only tau chew gum

Thanks for the compliments.

And tracks on the armored vehicles and some start to weathering.

I really like these.

28mm you say? I've really been wanting to do some appropriately sized WW2 era vehicles (modified of course) to go with my converted Cultist army. Do these models match up with Games Workshop scale?

I use them, and vehicle wise they're fine. The only problem is the guns, and then purely because weapons and weapon barrels in 40k are.. freaking insane.

Looking good!

Some light chipping with a dark brown-black on the edges and around the hatches would really set those miniatures off.

The beautiful thing about Chaos conversions is that you can make all kinds of stuff work.

Mainly I need something from the era that is the correct scale for non Space Marines.

Assuming they're the same things I use for my orks (they look to be), then they'll be a teeny bit on the large side by largely all right.

The main problem is they have bizarre footprints, at least compared to most 40k vehicles.

I think the Warlord vehicles are 1:56 scale. You can also get 1:48 scale models which would be bigger and maybe more in scale with the GW figures.

I would strongly consider using GW weapons to replace the .50 or other MGs on these for use with GW stuff because as mentioned the weapons will look scrawny next to the 40K stuff.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Got more work done last night. A bit more weathering to include some 'chipping' effect (was working on it before it was suggested even! ). I think they'll get a matte coat next then I'll try playing with pigments a bit.

Okay, added a tiny bit of mud (really just an excuse to play with my new pigments and pigment fixer) and painted up the machine guns and the bags in the jeep. I do still need to add stowage, but that will wait until the stowage I ordered comes in.

I built up some German vehicles this week I'll try to start painting next week, so look out for a new topic.

Here are the updated pictures:

So, consider these 'done' for now. They've been clear coated and should be good 'as is' until I get the stowage and time to paint it up.

I've enjoyed working on these. I hope the German vehicles come out as nicely as I think these did.

Looking good so far. The soliders really need to take better care of their vehicles though. They have clearly been to hell and back.

Yep. They are 'over weathered'. Big time. Mostly as a way for me to play with new (to me) techniques and tools. On another forum where I posted these I went into why I generally don't apply gobs of mud for example, and though I stuck with that I did go overboard on rust/chipping though I did try to keep it to logical places.

I don't think it's so much an issue of too much mud as it is too stark mud. The areas of high texture have no intermediate grime before you return to the standard paint color and the areas of 'highlight' mud are significantly lighter than the surrounding clumps. A little dry pigment application to ease the transition might make the weathering a bit more believable, while still being heavy. If you instead want to weaken the overall dirtiness, just attack the thing with a chip brush or give it a gentle scrubbing with a (stiffer, by nature) toothbrush.
