Quick Background: So a friend of mine is coming over with weekend for some Warhammer Shenanigans he is fairly new, but has games under his belt. He is playing the current Chaos Marine Codex with an Iron Warriors theme. I am planning on moving and everything is packed away except for my Horus Heresy army, which I have been actively working on. Also we are not doing anything too crazy and only hitting 1500 points.

Since Chaos can use the Veterans of the Long War upgrade for a little bonus, I am letting it count against my 30k army.

Question is what would you allow in this situation if you wanted to do 30k vs modern 40k with the VotLW rule? Just curious what Dakka thinks.

Edit: Here is what I will be using against him if Interested. Nothing too crazy. http://imgur.com/JpBxVIj

Allow it? I probably would, depending on how nice the guy was. If he was a Hole, I probably wouldn't.

The scope of VotLW is pretty well defined to just the standard 40K codices.

Are you a Wolf, a Sheep, or a Hound?

I would allow it, for a loyalist 30k legion army.

There are always going to be little things like this in any game of 40k vs. 30k. Shouldn't take things too seriously.

Personally, I'd allow it. It's not that different from the Legion bonus rules really?

Could you just use the 40k Space Marine Codex though? A space marine is a space marine, regardless of the armour mark (it's totally ok if the only reason for not doing so is "but I want to use the army I'm working on" - it's great encouragement to keep painting stuff).

Possibly, but the 30K units do not allow for a lot of the weapon mix we see come out after the Codex Astartes. So, it's doable, but the model selection available may not be as good for a Codex army.

I'd definitely allow it. It can be hard enough getting people to play against a 30K army, even harder if you're going to try to take away their options while keeping yours.

I would look into doing this but I just do not have the models for the normal 40k marines, or I would have.

The warp could send the 40k iron warriors back in time to fight the 30k marines and I'm pretty sure they would still hate them just as much.

So ya I'd allow it.

I'd allow it against any loyalist 30k army.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Legion Marines are certainly not Chapter Marines. The MK of armor has no rules benefit, but army building to unit options and cost are completely different.

I'd allow it. Would make for a very interesting game too.

I think you've missed my point. I'm not saying take units of 20 tactical marines from the SM codex and call it 40k - but a unit of 10 marines, of which one has a special weapon and one has a heavy weapon using the points values from the 40k codex can easily be built using either 30k models or 40k models. Use the 40k list but the 30k models (some obviously won't have analogies, like the legion-specific units).

However, it's not always going to be practical, as several posters have pointed out.

based on the title of this thread "Log war" i was assuming to see a picture of a lumberjack, or a pile of poop, or maybe a lumberjack taking a poop.
