I haven't played a game with the new SM codex yet and I've been working on some lists lately. What I'm noticing is, when I outfit a tactical squad in a pod, the main use I have in mind for them is to use their special weapons against a specific threat (anti-armor, -hordes, or -TEQ). So I'm wondering, is the better strategy is to fill each pod with 10 marines with a special weapon and combi-weapon and throw extra bolter shots and wounds where I need them, or would I be better off with just 5 men in each pod, still with 2 of a particular weapon (special + combi) at a cheaper cost, but still able to go after a certain threat? My only worry with that is their survivability.

I've been working on lists for a few different point levels (750, 1250, 1750, 1850). Also, I'd be using Salamander chapter tactics, if that helps any, so I'm mainly dealing with meltas and flamers. No multi-meltas or heavy weapons, as they're pretty much useless out of a pod.

Nobody really wants to pay for more Bolter shots; Bolters suck.

Therefore, 5 man squads are going to be more effective to get in more specialized weapons.

Indeed - what sort of bastard would want to use their codex?

I've been a long time Sallies fan. Personally, I only run 2 5man tacticals for my min troop tax and run melta, cmelta, mbombs. Depending on the tournament I'm playing at, I might keep them 10mans for more bodies. Nova for example, extra bodies can help on specific mission types.

Overall, min/max troop choices is a plus. Although it seems a little obnoxious try 30 sternguard lists with a few mastercrafted cmeltas thrown in. Easily one of my more successful lists. Need the correct support for it though.
