so how does this look, what should I add next?. I'm using the space wolves FOC with this list.
so far only the thunderwolf cav and rune priest on bike are not built yet so they are the only ones on this list whose loadout I can change. the rest are permanent.
I don't particularly want to take stuff out of this list, I just want to know roughly how good it is and what I should add next.

I can add points costs if necessary, I just don't have the books to hand while I'm writing this.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
forgot to mention, the priest will be in with the tunderwolf cav and will be using biomancy to make them stick about for a while

You're never going to need a Storm Shield for all your Thunderwolf Cavalry models. The pack itself always comes with a Pack Leader (who's a Character), and you're adding an Independent Character. Between model placement and Look Out, Sir!, you probably won't need more than 1 SS for every 2 models. 2 SSs for every 3 models, if you're worried, but you can save 15 or 30 points, there, by removing a SS or 2.

Are you planning to run this as Company of the Great Wolf (the Champions of Fenris detachment), or Wolves Unleashed (from Codex: Space Wolves), or Unbound? Because, right now, it's Unbound. Using a formation pulls the units out of the Detachment (the Formation is basically an allied army).

I'd also say you could drop a special weapon or two out of each of your squads, but that gets into changes you said you don't want to make...

ok will remove the SS from the rider with the CC weapon. what should I spend those points on instead as that would leave me 15 points short of 1850, two have melta bombs already as does the preist.

I'm running it as wolves unleashed. from what I have read the stormclaw formation does not take units out of the FOC like some other formations.

also just out of curiosity if the mount gives rending will the rider lose it if I give them a wolf claw? I have been informed it will but I want to check as I'm skeptical. if I get to keep rending with the claw then that may be what I swap the shield for and instead have a claw and a CC weapon.

In the last edition, any weapon with any Special Rule of its own would lose Rending. In the new edition, that is not true, so Wolf Claws on a Thunderwolf Cavalry model gives the model both Shred and Rending, so you're re-rolling failed to-wound rolls, and 6s automatically wound at AP2... and the re-rolls also mean you're ~slightly~ more likely to get 6s, but there's still no guarantee.

I don't have the Sanctus Reach set, so I don't have immediate access to the rules for the Fierce-Eye's Finest Formation, but the Basic Rule Book is pretty specific that any Formation can't be part of another Detachment (Pg 121 "Formations are a special type of Detachment..." Pg 118, "...all the units in your army must belong to a Detachment, and no unit can belong to more than one Detachment"). There are, occasionally, Codex and Supplement rules that supersede BRB rules, but I haven't heard of any that allow you to break that rule... Check the rules for the Formation, but I'm pretty sure that by putting models in the Fierce-Eye's Finest Formation, they can't also be in the Wolves Unleashed Detachment. So, in this case, you're one Troop slot short of Wolves Unleashed. Splitting that 10-man Grey Hunter pack into 2 packs of 5 would do the trick.

Reasonably, though, you could also drop at least one Melta Bomb (you could probably drop all of them, if you want). Between the Thunder Hammer, the potential for Rending, and the Rune Axe giving the Rune Priest +1 to Strength and AP 2 attacks, you shouldn't need a lot of Melta. You may not need any. For that same reason, you could also consider dropping the Thunder Hammer and using a Power Fist, instead (basically the same, you just lose Concussive, which only matters for opponents who have more than one Wound AND survive the first Turn of attacks... saves another 5 points).

If my math is correct, dropping all the Melta Bombs, one Storm Shield, and the TH for a PF, you've saved 35 points, which gets you a Drop Pod (or any number of other things...). If you do break that GH unit up, you can make a 5-man Close Combat team (Thunder Hammer and Power Axe) and a 5-man Shooting team (Plasma Pistol and Plasma Gun). The Shooting team can be Drop Podded in to hit something, or the CC team can be Podded in to get them closer to a target (though they can't Assault the round they Deep Strike, so they're likely to get shot up... which is why Podding the Shooting team might be the better choice?). Or the 35 points could get you a Wolf Guard Pack Leader for the Shooting team and a Wolf Standard... If you use the Wolf Standard, keep your other units reasonably close to that unit so that, when they're finally in Assault range, you can get them all close enough to each other to benefit from the +1 Attack. Up until then, keep them far enough apart from each other so that they can't get pie-plated.
