This is another revision of my starter imperial guard army I've got in the pipeline. So far there's just lasgunners and my commander.
I'm trying to go for a decently competitive 1000 point force that I can later build upon.

This is the core of the force I'd like to tweak as little as possible:

CCS, 2 plasma guns, chimera 155
Veterans squad, 3 plasma guns 115
PCS, 2 melta guns, chimera 110
Infantry squad, melta gun 60
Infantry squad, melta gun 60
HWS, autocannons 75
LREX, LC, MMS 160
LREX, LC, MMS 160

Valkyrie?

Which is 615 points, so with the remaining 375 I'm thinking of either:

Primaris psyker ML2 OR another HWS with autocannons for 75 points
2 LR exterminators with sponson heavy bolters for 150 each

I decide to go for LR's to take the heat off the Chimeras, while a primaris payker would be used for divination. I figured either would be enough wih the HWS to cover anti infantry, anti light mech and anti air if need be. In my mind that covers all bases with duality and redundancy.

That's a whole lotta Melta! Seems like your anti-tank is well covered at 1,000 pts, though I would be concerned about heavy infantry. Maybe splash some plasma guns on your Vets for that BS4 rapid fire plasma? Rolling in a Chimera w/ 2 fire ports should give you a pretty threatening presence.

Regarding Psykers, if you can or are willing, have you considered Inquisition? You can ally in a cheap Inquisitor with a cheap warband for more psychic charges at better points-per-charge than AM can.

Your list seems completely reasonable. Your not likely to kill anything but if you play for objectives and your opponents list is not super killy you stand a chance.

- might drop a chimera or 2 for wyverns
- might drop a hws or 2 for wyverns
- might use 375 for an imperial knight

wyverns are annoying to play but they are really really good. The knight gives you something big and scary to force opponents to deal with.

Just guard by itself is really tough. My current strat is to drop all my chimeras for wyverns. give heavy weapon and camo to vets in the backfield. Then drop melta stormtroopers to get upfield objectives. I also bring the dakka knight of doom to give my opponent something to worry about.

I wouldn't want to go for a knight because at 1k it seems kinda cheesy and this is part for friendly games while eventually tournaments; although I suppose once I've gotten into it I'll make revisions.

I think the idea of not cover AT well enough is something I've always worried about, so the AC's are my compromise for duality so I can also cover higher toughness infantry and the like.

I've thought about inquisition, I just couldn't work out what to do really besides liber heresius for scouting the blob.

I could give the veterans plasma guns and add in a wyvern? I just felt I had anti infantry covered. I agree about heavy infantry. I could drop a leman russ for 3 sentinels with plasma cannons?

People seem very divided about Exterminators since they're generalists. I've mostly added them in for that reason though.

EDIT: How about an Enginseer with servitors and plasma cannons? I could get out a volley or two, give them fire on my target, repair a leman russ and give it POTMS? Seems like a decent idea to make the Russ's more of a magnet.
