Hey everyone new to age of sigmar and wanted to know a few questions
First is whats the standerd wound count for a good sized game
and i recently left 40k because i build my armies on fluff and for look hoping that other people would do that aswell
but doesnt seem like they do and just want to win so i get tore to pieces, im not a competitive person at all and heard that age of sigmar isnt like that.
and lastly it would be nice if someone would walk me through building a balanced fun army to play.

Everything you mentioned is entirely dependent on the people you play against.

If you want a game where you can be fluffy and not get destroyed for it, then I think you are better off either:

Finding better suited opponents

Or playing a different game.

In short, go see what AOS players in your area are doing, it well help you out a lot more with a game like this.

There's isn't really a rock-paper-scissors thing going on with the game. Each unit has strengths and weakness, but that doesn't make them invincible. Most units can hurt most other units, though some hurt specific units a little more. So balance isn't really built around finding counters to your opponent's special abilities. In general, I think you can pretty much bring whatever you want and have a fun game where even if you don't win, you'll feel like you made your opponent work for it. Thematic armies should make for a fun game, win or lose.

The game says that around 100 models is an afternoon's worth of gaming, but that feels a bit too much for me. I'd aim for armies roughly the same size as the starter box (75 wounds-ish?) made up of warscrolls at minimum unit size (unless they explicitly get benefits for larger groups). Terrain is also pretty important in the game, so bring a bunch of that.

Sounds like you are sick of playing people who bring 5+ wraithknights (or whatever the latest meta spam is).

As said go find out what the local players are doing before you buy anything. They might be playing it 'right' and be fun, fluffy players who will be perfect for you, or they could just be abusing the even looser rules of AoS to bring 10+ of the latest meta spam.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

I usually play max 50 wounds, with a maximum of three hero keywords and only one monster keyword.

Most armies I see with these restrictions have 1 monster, 2 heroes, and a mix of cavalry or troops for the rest. Every game seems close with these restrictions... the only folks who seem to do better are those of us who use characters and specific units for their abilities/synergy (like King Leuon and Britonnian Knights or Chakax and Temple Guard).

In my experience 50-75 wounds allowance* is the go-to comfortable level that gets to enjoy various tactical aspects as you can field enough artillery, monsters and support units/heroes for it to stop being a simple "smash him in the face" although I lean towards 75 personally. It feels like 1500 points game to me. 100 somewhat feels like 2000/ETC 2400 points battles and anything past that might be too cumbersome without movement trays. :-)

A good indicator is that the starter forces from AoS box are somewhere around 50 wounds count (47 for the Sigmarine side), so you could easily see the game being a little basic using that force, but if you had another set of it and fielded twice as many stormcast eternals (and replaced heroes with, say, archers for more ranged support or paladins for more smashing power) it'd be optimal for that army.

*- I marked it because we play by the store comp and it says there that when you buy models with wound for a unit with 10 or more models, you get two instead (so two halberdiers for 1 wound or two ogres for 4 wounds), which makes it easier to hit the occasional "if 20 models or more then..." conditions for some units, so basically you're looking at fielding about 75-110 wounds in such battle, depending on how many single-wound infantry units you're pumping up.

We also figured that 50 to 75 wounds is a comfortable number to play.
However, wound composition is too inaccurate, e.g. 10 Executioners and 10 Bloodreavers are equally counted.
Therefore, we have switched to the azyr comp system. Here 10 Executioners are 6 pts and 10 Blooreavers are 2 pts. Looks more balanced overall.
