Tyrannocytes must shoot at the closest enemy unit. What if they cannot damage that unit (e.g. a landraider)? Do they still have to shoot it or can they target the closest unit they are capable of damaging?

Like all the other Automatic Fire Rules, it never takes into account situations where it is illegal to fire at the 'closest target.'
This could mean it is unable to fire at all, that we are meant to be targeting the closest legal target, or something else entirely....

Talk to your opponent about this known problem with any Automatic Fire weapon.

Why would it be illegal to fire at the closest target in this case? I'm not seeing a rule in 7th edition that forbids you from firing on a unit that you can't wound.

I was meaning there are known problems with these Rules in general, not this specific situation, sorry.
As one has to work out the finer details with their opponent in any case, this is something else that should be addressed then.

I think it's quite clear... shot at the closest in range and LoS... it's a mindless spore, that fire at the first thing he doesn't like.

Also, in a video interview with the white dwarf, they said that the idea of the model despite being a MC, you should fire each cannon to the closest from each weapon, treating it like a vehicle rather than a MC. Also fireing more than 2 is like a vehicle rather than a MC... but I think that is something to talk to the oponent

They might have said that in an interview and how some people play it but RAW, as it's a MC, every one of it's weapons has a 360 arc of fire, so that's five blasts or fifteen S5 shots at the same target.

As for OP, just because you can't hurt it, doesn't mean it's not the closest. The best away to avoid this is to DS it near stuff it can hurt and then move around 6" per turn to get the most out of it's shooting capacity.

If people want to be able to target units they cannot harm in beneficial scenarios, such as firing both krak missile and flamer at a tank so an intervening infantry unit can get roasted, (and people do) then they should be forced to target units they cannot harm when required also.
