Subject: What next after the starter for Imperials?

Hi, I've been convinced by a friend and by seeing a local tournament to pick up the xwing starter set (which I'm picking up tomorrow). The thing is, I'm probably going to be picking up a couple of other ships for the imperials and could do with some advice on whats worth picking up in order to have a well balanced list.
Is there any advantage to picking up a second starter over a single tie booster and maybe a tie advanced?
Cheers for any help

First I would wait a week or so and find out when the new edition starter is going to be released. Or just pick up a single one and then get a single of the new one when it hits the street. We think the announcement will be Sep 4th.
The rules will not change in any significant way we think, just all the errata and FAQ's added to the old version, so no worry's there. It will have some new ships and upgrades.
As to the rest of your fleet. I would suggest you see if your friend has some different ships for you to try out. Some ships are harder than others to fly. You may just prefer one ship over another.
Whisper is great but I still prefer to take Howlrunner and a mini swarm.
So if you can, try before you buy.
Honestly though, if you really get into the game, you will more than likely get at least one of every ship. Both to play with and to get the different upgrade cards from them.

Cheers nicorex, I'm thinking of the starter and imperial aces to get me started, don't mind spending more when the new starter hits to upgrade my collection.

Imperial Aces is a great buy, no doubt. If you are interested in flying TIE Interceptors, be sure to get the expansion so you can get Soontir Fel (one of the best pilots in the game).
Other than that, just buy what you're interested in!

Would you guys suggest the tie bomber being a good next buy to compliment the two core set tie fighters? I am not a huge fan of the interceptors or the stock tie advanced. (I do like the upcoming inquisitor prototype tie, but thats a ways off from being released sadly).
Basically I was considering adding the simple faction bombers to the starter set like 1 y wing and 1 tie bomber.

Tie Bomber has a great dial and is very durable. The problem is that it has relatively little in the way of offensive shooting. Bombs are good, and have gotten a lot of love recently but they are hard to play well. Missiles and Torpedoes are junk because you have to spend too many actions to use them, and are usually avoided. I don't see them played as "Ace with Mini-Swarm" because of the low offensive potential.
Tie Phantom or Interceptor (or Vader) make much better Aces. The Phantom is pretty much ready to go out of the box (doesn't really need upgrades that come with other ships) but is tough to learn to fly well. If you are up for the challenge, I'd add the Phantom. It can be really competative.
Going with a single Y or Bomber isn't a bad idea either.

Well if you're going Imperials, one of my personal favorite ships is the Tie Defender. Looks awesome, decently durable, and can be hard to lock down if played correctly.

Buying at least one of each of the small base Imperial ships is very useful, simply because it gets you the unique pilots.
If you want to run large formations of basic TIEs, I would recommend a second starter + 1 TIE Fighter expansion. it brings you to 5 total ties, along with 2 X-Wings and all the extras, for about 45 more bucks (if you know where to look).
If TIEs have nothing for you, Interceptors are my personal favorites, with Defenders and Phantoms ties as close seconds. Phantoms take some getting used to to fly, like Anpu said, but once you get it down it can be vicious (it is also the only ship with a firepower of 4).
Defenders are amazing, but points wise are very pricy. Still a good choice for your base ship for a flight.

You can't go wrong with a tie fighter expansion. Point for point, there are few pilots who bring as much to a squad as howlrunner!

Thanks for the advice guys unfortunately the store had sold out again of the starters but ive got one reserved from the new stock coming in next week. Got to see the new ships that had just arrived, the inquisitor tie is huge compared to the standard tie and certainly looks cool.
I'm definitely drifting towards the starter and 1 tie expansion to get started before diving in and getting loads of ships.
