Subject: James Bond - not that big a thing in the UK?
Jimsolo wrote: Someone the other day told me that James Bond was an American thing, and that the franchise wasn't that big of a deal in the UK. Is that true?
While I'm not British... IF James Bond weren't a "big deal" in the UK.... why did they have him and the queen skydive into the opening ceremony at the Olympics?
I think James Bond is a big deal all over the world, probably ESPECIALLY in the UK. He is a British agent, after all, and the movies are (or were) mostly filmed in England.
And I loved that 007 bit in the Olympics opening ceremony, it must have been an honor for Daniel Craig to get to do a scene with the Queen!

Lol, not me! I'm a Bond fan all the way. As a young man in the dark days of Brosnan I feared the franchise was dead. But Craig is crushing it out there!

The books were written by a British author. The films are produced by an American company, made in the UK, feature mainly British actors and crew, and the publisher is Japanese.
I think this might be one of those things that’s got lost slightly in translation. The biggest and most important audience for a Bond movie is the US, but this isn’t because the UK doesn’t care about Bond, but just because they’re about one quarter as big an audience.
“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.
He was featured in the olympics opening ceremony wasn't he?
Every british bloke wants to be james bond at some point or other, myself included.

Thought the producers (Eon Pictures) were British in origin, not American.

The Eon company is UK based, it was started by two Americans, Saltzman and Broccolli, the film copyrights are held by MGM since they bought United Artists to whom Saltzman had sold his shares at some point.

I did not know Broccoli was from the US, though admittedly I never really looked into it either. You learn something new everyday.
