Sorry for the literally awful quality, honest. Once I get my camera (took this with my phone) I'll repost it. This'll do for the time being I suppose. These are the first five models I've ever painted, so criticism and the like is welcomed.

They're actually very nicely painted.

TheEyeOfNight- I swear, this thread is 70% smack talk, 20% RP organization, and 10% butt jokes
TheEyeOfNight- "Ordo Xenos reports that the Necrons have attained democracy, kamikaze tendencies, and nuclear fission. It's all tits up, sir."

Sternguard though, those guys are all about kicking ass. They'd chew bubble gum as well, but bubble gum is heretical. Only tau chew gum

Neat but flat. Try doing a basic wash + highlight on your stuff so they don't look flat.

Basing needs work, good bases do wonders for paint jobs of all kinds.

Finally, they are very dark. Now of course it is all up to personal opinion, but even dark paint jobs should kind of look bright or like it has light on it. All the best paintjobs tend to look like they are in the daylight. Even the most dark colors come out somewhat bright during the day. Colour adds contrast, liveleyness and so on that will make your models pop.

With a wash then highlight combined with some nice basing you will be well on your way to an above average painter. My advice would be to watch tutorials while you assemble or paint (even for non related models etc) and then apply bits you learn. But get the basics down first.

Thanks so far! How would I go about adding some color and highlights? I'll use Nuln oil to wash, though. I have a pot of that handy.

What I do, is I use a darker colour as the base, then depending on the colour (black wash suits a lot of colour) I wash it Heavily (it always dries thinner than it looks wet).

Once it is dry I get a lighter colour and lightly apply the lighter colour to the heightened areas or flat areas (leaving deep black in the recesses).

To get a lighter colour sometimes it's as easy as mixing white into the colour, or getting a lighter colour. For black I use Grey for example.

Add that to basing and it makes a big difference. I advise getting a test model and trying it out. I would say thats the basics of painting, but I am not an amazing painter. Thats my basic method I use.

Hard to judge paint quality with this picture only. If you could get something better, you would receive more aimed answers.

Meanwhile - just look on my tutorial: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/490290.page

It's very simple way of zenithal base coat, wash and highlights. All with pictures to easily pick things up.

I... actually don't know. Help?

Looks good! Only thing is, they lack contrast. Try picking out the gold and brass a bit more.

Yeah, hit up the metalic details on the models, and don't be afraid to go a little over the lines, you can always touch up the black or the red again. Another thing that might help is finding a darker grey paint and using that to highlight the top half or edges of the knees, head, arms, etc.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

I'd recommend some drybrushing on the weapons - maybe some leadbelcher etc just to make them pop a bit more.
I really like the bases but would recommend doing the rims of the base a yellowish-cream to match the sand. That will make them stand out more.

Certainly improving.

If you have it wash the gold in Seraphim Sepia and then highlight with a brighter gold.

You should be proud if these are your first models, they're consistent and you've thought about the bases too, which a lot of new painters ignore. A good base can bring even a moderate paintjob up a level.

I'd recommend these official GW painting videos, I found one actually for these specific models!

You might want to give it a watch and see if you can apply any of the tips Duncan gives to your own painting. He's got a real knack of making painting look easy so don't feel bad if you can't match his quality, but the advice in all these videos is golden.

Keep up the good work, and good luck with your next models too!

Agreed, Duncan is the bomb. While it might be your colours, the techniques are the same.

I think the models look great!

Only suggestion would be to work on the basing a bit; finer grain sand, painted, drybrushed and then some suitable static grass / tufts would look good.

does not look like the bases are sealed....
Mix paint (the colour you want as a base),water and wood glue together and use a wash brush. let it dry and bush over
It will make it go super hard .the gravel that is...........
