Since just one of them is its own army, they can easily be put into your army as an ally. Just curious if you think that's a good or bad idea.

Good idea in what context? Effective on the table? Something your opponent will appreciate you doing?

Good from what perspective?
In the fluff knights are very rare, probably more so than marines. Also it depends on your factions fluff, if your armies close to the mechanicus its more likely, if your not close like the blood angels maybe less likely. But despite this every one runs wraithknights and riptides which are also very rare or prototypes so why not.
In the Game, sure, they'll probably fill any hole you have in your list and more, so long as you can bare the depressed sigh you may receive from your opponent when you bring it out.

Good idea! Do it!
I'd love to make a Dark Eldar-y version of a Knight at some point.

Meh, this thread almost sounds trollish... but I'll bite:
My .02¢
Throw down 5 of those honkers on the table and you are TFG.
Field one and you are still TFG.
If you even think about fielding something your gaming buddy cannot counter, you're going to be TFG.
So, field whatever sounds good, and make a few contingency lists just in case. Let the other guy know you want to use your knight. If he says 'no' then he becomes TFG.
Verbal contracts are fun.

Age of Sigmar - It's sorta like a clogged toilet, where the muck crests over the rim and onto the floor. Somehow 'ground marines' were created from this...

I disagree with this. If the other guy legitimately cannot field an army that can handle it, or would not enjoy it being in the game, then he is most definitely not TFG for saying "no" to a Knight. I run swarm Nids: my Gaunts are not going to scratch it. Keep that crap in Apocalypse, in my opinion!

It's not meant to be trolling at all. It was an honest question. While I know that all managers of GW shops are salesmen that are trying to get even their best customers to buy something new each time they walk in the store, he did make a good point about Knights. I mentioned wanted to run three of them as a 1000 point team, but I just cannot spend the money right now. He said he completely understood, but you could always bring one in as an ally because they are their own army. I love the way the Knights look, and I'd love to make a project out of painting one... trying to get it just right. Depending on if I thought the finished product was good or not, I might ask the manager of the store to put it on display in the display case they have of people who have won contests, just donated some pieces for people to see, etc. That way, I could just go take it out of the display case whenver I wanted to play it. I wouldn't have to worry about transporting it back and forth. So, while I know it was a blatant sales tactic, the manager did pique my interest in possibly investing in the model and paints to build a Knight. Again, it'd be something that I'd do over a period of time coming after whatever I'd want to buy/paint for my main army. This is the reason I brought up adding it as an ally. I could bring it in to my DA army as an ally without having to make sure it's part of a formation/detachment from another army to remain Battle Forged. SG

Adding Knights to your army is always a good idea.
