Not a fan of this release, aft torpedoes, are the only thing I'm thinking might have use. For me at least

What about the retail "High Energy Sensor Sweep?" That card is phenominal.

I actually like the Phoenix ability, and the new Maxwell will be nice on the Akiras with Aft torpedoes.

I'd love an aresenal card, half the points, only 1 slot, for the romulans, so I can gear up my scouts n sciences. But I feel it has utility elsewhere in turning little utility ships into threats.

Aft torpedoe launcher, yes yes yes.

I need one for the Thunderchild, and a second one for the Yeager.

It's a nice ship, stats about the same as a galaxy where it should be. This version of Maxwell is nice as well. Still not sold on the time token version of torpedoes.

Gona have to try a list built around the high yield photons resource for an upcoming OP.

it's the quiet ones you have to look out for. Their the ones that change the world, the loud ones just take the credit for it.

I already have high energy sweep x2, other than Aft Torpedoes and maybe Arsenal its not that great of a release. Unless I miss a FAQ that changes all secondary weapons to time tokens, I have no intention of using time token based cards. So far only the Federation and Romulans have cost effective ways of dealing with them, and with wizkid's Klingon hate. I don't see this changing for them, hell I don't see them getting a great secondary weapon at all. Klingon torpedoes are good as any other, but they aren't top notch.

Sad thing is I'll still get one anyway, Why? I get one of all the 4 major factions.

The ship: Wow. Very nice! Good upgrade bar, nice ability, good stats... nice ship!

Captain Maxwell: I kinda like him better then his Admiral version. Not a bad skill number, has an elite slot, and a free re-roll with secondary weapons.

Admiral Haden is a steal for 1 point. Combine his Fleet Action with Dorsal Phaser.... mmmm. Nice. Irks me that it's only range 1-2, when you have a card that allows you to make torpedo attacks outside of your firing arc, and most photons are range 2-3, meaning the sweet spot for this guy is range 2. Yeah, not gonna be used all that often unless you have a fleet of ships with secondary weapons.

Elizabeth Lense: Look! A way to convert all your Disables into Time Tokens! Woot! Or, at 1 point, a sacrifice card for other cards... "Throw her into the matter replicators so we can get +1 to our attack this round!".

Terry: I feel like we've seen a card or two like this before...

High Energy Sensor Sweep: It's, ummm.... well... 5 points is a bit steep. If only there was a Federation Captain for 4 points that could do this as a free action...

Quantum Torps are shiney! Photons are old school!

Arsenal: Hmm. If I use Rapid Reload with this card, does that mean I use a Torp, use Rapid Reload to place only 1 Time Token, and that time token would go on Arsenal, thus my Torp would NOT have a Time Token on it? 6 points and two upgrade slots seems kinda steep to be able to fire a Torp every turn... LOL

Aft Torpedo Launcher is probably the best card in this wave. If only there was a Photon Torp that you could fire at range one. Oh wait... You could spend more points to ignore the disable/transfer it to another card, or 1 point for Elizabth Lense and 4 points for Arsenal from this pack and be able to use it every turn. It seems weird that just as Wizkids is converting everything over to Time Tokens, we get an upgrade with a disable, and in the same pack, a crew card that converts disables into Time Tokens, and another card that reduces Time Tokens on weapons.

It's been a while since I've seen a ship with so much synergy. As in, you can and actually would use all the upgrades that come with the ship on the ship, and it would do pretty well. Of course, the Phoenix would be a 64 point ship, but...

Pretty good assessment Tamwulf

Aft Torpedo Launcher has convinced me to get two of these. I don't know why but Arsenal makes me want to may some Oberth class torpedo boats. I guess its the no red on the dial and white come abouts.

It burns me a little that Terry and Prefix Code are Action + Disables/Discard. I really hate double cost cards and in Terry's case triple for the disable 2 shields. Terry me off. WK finally got a repair card right with Glen Daro and then they drop another one of these over taxes cards. There are not many times when you are going to have two shields left when taking hull damage. If he was disable 1 then he would synergize with High Energy Sensor Sweep.

I really hope that the upcoming IRW Devoras comes with a Romulan version of After Torpedo Launcher. My Warbirds want this card, but 10 points cross faction is little steap.

I Was planning on getting one of these suckers, but with the Arsenal card and the Aft Torpedo launchers, I am SOOOO getting two min.

Did anybody else notice that the Aft torpedo launchers basically give the Federation ships 360 arc with Photon torpedoes?

Yeah it is pretty cool .

With Aft Torpedo Launcher, time token torps, and Sensor Sweep you can have some fun using the TOS Enterprise with crewman Spock.
You can do the same thing with Dorsal Phasers but torpedoes seem more thematic.

Let's not forget why we don't take Phonton Torps in the first place. Limited to front/rear arc, require a target lock, and disables/time tokens, and receives no range bonuses. Also means you can't convert the hits. Action economy is pretty bad with torps. This is the base case of a Photon Torp (and most secondary weapons).

Any ship with a Primary Attack of 5 or greater does not need secondary weapons. Indeed, you are actually diminishing the efficiency of your ship to deliver an attack.

Consider a ship with 4/2/3/4 (or 4/2/4/3): Point cost 26 points. Add a Photon Torp for +5 points, ship total 31 points.

Now consider a ship with 5/2/3/4: Point cost: 28 points. So for +2 points, I "upgraded" my ship to equal the firepower of a Photon Torp, without all the very bad action economy. In addition, I can probably convert more with the primary attack vs. a Torp (typically convert 1 miss or re-roll a die).

What does this mean? Take Photons if you want for a ship with 4 or less primary attack dice. Right now, it's still cheaper to take two Photon Torps then one Photon Torp with a bunch of extra cards to fire it every turn (I know, some builds can do this- Feds with Spock on that one Fed ship). It might even out if you have a card that reduces upgrade costs. If you start taking multiple photons across your entire fleet (say 3 or more), consider upgrading a ship instead.

For example, you could have 3 ships of 4/2/3/4 all with one Photon Torp. You just spent 15 points on secondary weapons. A Reman Warbird is 6/2/7/3 and costs 36 points. 10 points more than one of your ships. What you could do is take one Photon Torp on a 4/2/3/4 ship, have a "Plain Jane" 4/2/3/4, and your final ship be a Reman Warbird 6/2/7/3. The attack dice are the same for both fleets, but the action economy of the second fleet is way better.

Torps are still a bad idea when you can take ships with 5 or more primary attack values. If STAW had limited all ships to 4 or less attack dice, we would see far more Torps/secondary weapons. Time Tokens shook things up a bit, but still do nothing to solve the Torp problem.

The USS Yeager with Aft torpedo launcher though... Give it spock or Picard, and the action economy is absurdly great.

Your right, Torpedoes have been effectively made usesless, or at least the least useful use of an upgrade.

Unfortunately the Aft Torpedoe Launcher can only go on a ship with a hull of 4 or more, so the poor Yeager is out of luck unless you put a flagship on it. Though I bet when the Mongolfier comes out next year it will have some kind of upgrade to help it out.

I think what Aft Torpedoe Launcher does do is it will give more people a reason to take ships that don't have a rear arc and don't want to buy multiple Enterprise E expansions. For actiln economy and competitive OPs yeah the Dorsal Phasers are an easier investment. However if you want something more thematic, especially in casual play ( where buying 3-4 E's is less likely) the Aft Launcher can be fun.

Now I will say the Aft Launcher might synergies better on the Sutherland because it gets rerolls when firing at range 3 and the Dorsal Phasers are only range 1-2.

With the Sutherland, you could put both aft torpedo launcher, dorsal phaser array, and the arsenal upgrade, giving you plenty of slots for torpesos and a 360 with your primary weapon. Add in capatain spock, and bam, its a great big torpeso boat.

Ya know, I forgot the Prefix Code in my assessment above.

It would seem that Wizkids just willy-nilly prices elite talents. They start with a baseline 5 points, then at some point, someone says "Should be higher for reasons" or "Should be lower for reasons". When compared to other Elite Talent cards, it's five points. When considered with the rest of the game? It costs an action, is a discard, and gives you a Aux Power Token. Unless this card destroys the enemy ship, there is no reason why it should have so many disadvantages to disable only 2 shields. Note the keyword- disable. Useless on a cloaked ship, and useless on a ship with no shields. Using some kind of strategy with mines doesn't work either- it's too short ranged and takes place during the action phase. It's a talent for a high skill captain (*cough**cough* Picard *cough*), but there are better Elite Talents out there for 5 points (*cough* Picard Maneuver *cough*).

So nice idea, should have been in the Enterprize A (but that came with a bunch of cards anyways), but Wizkids blew it on the implementation.

You could make it work as a free action with Janice Rand (+2) and Pavel Checkhov (+3) can get rid of the Aux Token next round, but I can't think of a way to get around the discard of the elite talent or discarding Rand. Not a very good elite talent.

FYI, there is a crew upgrade- Noah Lessing for 2 points. Disable Noah and one tech upgrade, target a ship at range 1-2. Disable one shield. He costs +2 points.
