I have some wave serpents with pulse lasers modeled on the turrets. However the lasers are pretty poorly done.
Does anyone have any method of stripping them without hacking off the gun/turret itself?
For example brushing them down with a cotton bud soaked in dettol or something

Brush them down with turpentine would do it, otherwise soak gauze in isapropanol and wrap it around the part

Well, with Dettol, you need to be 100% certain you don't get even a drop on the rest of the model, or that paint is a goner. With Isopropyl, it's not quite as bad. You could always give the non-turret part a gloss coat.

Personally, I would try to pop the turret off, and repaint that subassembly.

I assume this isn't a super-duper painted model; in this case, you could sand it down with an 800 or 1000 grit sanding block -- having paint is ok, just make sure the brush strokes are gone -- and then brush prime it with Gesso and just paint over it.

A friend swears by something called LA Totally Awesome, which he says he can get at most Dollar Stores. He puts it in a dish or cup and soaks the item overnight. Might be difficult depending on the size and shape of the lasers, but brushing it on might work.

Yes, Biostrip 20 is pretty much perfect for this. It's thick so you can paint it on, it takes about an hour to work. Check out this topic, the guy uses it to just strip the paint off archers bows:

Just a tip: you might want to varnish the areas that you plan on keeping first. Not that varnish will protect the paint from Biostrip in any way, but when you're done stripping you might want to rinse parts in soapy water, so having the tank varnished would make that bit easier, as you can just rinse the whole thing without having to worry about the paint getting wet.

EDIT: in fact I've got loads, I'd be happy to post you a little jar of it if you PM me where to send it.
