Hi all again,

today I some more questions I failed to google/understand from codexes - about wh40k kill team campaign's defensive turret upgrade.

They say it's a gun emplacement which can shoot on its own with ws2, so apparently it's a quite cool if not OP t7 sv3+ ws2 twin-linked heavy bolter, which is apparently shooting at a crazy range 36'' s4 ap5 heavy 3. Correct me if I'm wrong - cheap toughness 7(!) 36''(!) heavy 3(!), Carl!

The question [1] is: can I use one of my units with WS4 next to it to shoot using the gun emplacement instead of automatic shooting WS2?
Question [2]: there is another upgrade "Target Designator", which allows once per game for one of my friendly models to shoot at an enemy model at WS5 instead of normal. Can I use it for the gun emplacement? (is it considered a "friendly model")? If yes, does it refer to one shot or all 3 it makes every turn?
Question [3]: can I move the turret somehow?
Question [4]: Monofilament weapons now shoot vs initiative instead of tougness. What do we do, if the gun emplacement has no initiative?

Just in case - kill team rules can be found here: http://heralds-of-ruin.blogspot.be/p/kill-team-rules.html

Thanks for everybody in advance!

A few things - it's BS2 not WS2 (Ballistic Skill, rather than Weapon Skill), and a heavy bolter is S5, AP4.
During your deployment you may place a Gun Emplacement within your deployment zone. This emplacement has a twin-linked heavy bolter and may fire on its own at BS2. It is always in control of the owning player and may not be used by the enemy.
(Emphasis mine)
(1) Because the italics part suggests it can only not be manually fired by the enemy, and the bolded part suggests it's not forced to use automatic fire, it is reasonable to conclude it can be manually fired by your own models.

(2) There is a bit of debate whether they count as models - The common argument is that we are told by the rules that models will have a Unit Type, whilst a Gun Emplacement instead has a Terrain Type (Battlefield Debris), meaning it needed the special allowance to be shot at and attacked in combat. However, the rules use the term "model" slightly inconsistently (sometimes talking about "scenery models") so we don' really know.
The "Target Designator" upgrade also fails to list a time limit on how long it lasts. Given that it talks about "spending" the token, I'd guess it's effects only lasts a turn, but affects all shots from that model.

(3) Gun Emplacements cannot move (they are not Infantry, and have no other Unit Type to give them a movement value).

(4) We're not given any way to resolve it - the rules for zero-level characteristics don't explain what happens if you have an Initiative of 0. So it's either:
a) They wound automatically.
b) They wound on 2+ (taking the way the Strength / Toughness chart works and extending it).
c) It rolls to wound against Toughness (similar to how it rolls against a vehicle's Armour Value).
But ultimately we just don't know.

I know that hasn't been a great help, but there is a link to the Heralds of Ruin Facebook group in the FAQ file, and it suggests asking any questions there

Vanished Completely

Quanar,
Their Model status is vital because of the following:
Basic rules apply to all the models in the game, unless stated otherwise. They include the rules for movement, shooting and close combat as well as the rules for morale. These are all the rules you’ll need for infantry models
- Basic Vs Advanced

Consider how that would interact with basic Rules like this one:
Models move up to 6" in the Movement phase.
- Movement Distance

This is why we demand proof that terrain meets the 'unit type' criteria for being a Model, as all sorts of Rules start applying to it as soon as that criteria has been met.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.
