To remove or at least minimise the spiral groove you can paint some PVA glue on the roll and stick tissue paper or toilet paper or even crumbled up newspapers and roll around. When properly dry just spray black and a quick dry brush with grey or silver. Boom

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

"You need not fear us, unless you are a dark heart, a vile one who preys on the innocent; I promise, you can’t hide forever in the empty darkness, for we will hunt you down like the animals you are, and pull you into the very bowels of hell." Iron - Within Temptation
This is how ive made Fuel/storage tanks out of toilet roll tubes before:
Take one tube and mark it into thirds, then mark one third in half. Now cut it carefully straight down its length, but don't open it up to much. Now cut along the marks so that you have 4 broken loops. Take a second tube and slide the largest two segments over the tube lined up so each end is thicker than the middle, there will be a small gap because the loops are the same size keep all the gaps on the same side and lined up as best as possible, Once your happy with the position glue them down with pva. Now do the same with the two thinner loops. The pipe can be turned into a tank with end caps, I find these look best if you sink them in side the tube by about half a cm, using pieces of sprue to hold a disc of cereal box card in place. The gaps left by the slits in the loops can either be used as is to stop the container rolling or as the footprint to glue to a scenic base. I generally coat all my terrain in pva (with or with out a coat of fine material, grout or coarse flour can be used to get a finer texture than sand if desired) then one or more coats of cheap poster paint as a base layer before either spraying or further painting is done.
