So, I've always loved the Adeptus Mechanicus, and ever since GW released the AdMech/Skitarii, I've been sorely tempted to have a small (2k) AdMech army (ok, so 2k isn't exactly small, but considering I have roughly 30,000 pts. of chaos...).
My main three questions are:
1) Which Imperial Knight works best with this army? Your standard Paladin, or should I go with a Crusader for the extra dakka? (I'd love to grab one of the Forge World AdMech Knights as a counts-as Paladin or Errant)
2) Are the Forge World Castellax battle automata roughly the same size as Kastellan Robots? I would rather spend a bit more money have an awesome looking unit then have a unit of Robbie-the-robots.
3) I've heard a lot about the AdMech War convocation formation, which looks awesome in terms of aesthetics, and seems really strong, what with the free upgrades. Is it considered cheesy? I tend to shy away from power-lists, since I'm a beer'n'pretzel gamer. Also, how does the whole free upgrade thing work? Am I just paying for bodies, then after I hit 1850 or 2k, I can go back and add weapon upgrades and wargear?

1 crusader is kind of way to go.
2 no idea but possible. However there's lots of conversion ideas out there to make castellans look nice mostly requires gs.
3 the pod lists with skittari are considered quite cheesy even more than war con. You pay unit tax to meet the requirements of formation than you go all out free upgreades. Some people will say it's op I personally find it fitting current design.

2) yes, they are basically exactly the same. http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/308022-40k-vs-30k-ad-mech-size-comparison/
3) You will get people whining it is unfair and op. It isn't, but you will have to hear it as sure as the sun rises. Even people running decurion getting free big fat saves will say that you getting a free weapon is op and unfair.

2) yeah. I use Castellax for powerfist bots and Vorax for phosphor bots.
3) ohhhh yeah. The non cheesy one is the other combo web formation they released. I use a convo list against tourney quality opponent lists and the other one against other lists. It's still cool, just less absurd.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |

What is this other formation you speak of?

Mechanicum war cohort? Something cohort. It's one of everything, 2-3 of a couple things, and you can barely squeeze it into 2k points. Gives canticles to everything and adds a "everything gets up to a 4+ invuln" canticle.
It's a recent "web exclusive" overshadowed by Convo since it's more rigid and less strong (requires 2 units of robots, Electropriests, a unit of 3 Ironstriders or dragoons and 2 crab-bots).
It might be better to just run 2 basic detachments though, I just like canticles to work like it should. If you despise having to shell out for ostrich walkers and useless Electropriests, steer clear.
