Hi all,

I'm interested in playing guard flier spam. I need to have some board presence turn 1. What are good options? I was thinking an inquisitor in a bunker, but that's kinda lame. I'd love to continue the theme of falling out of the sky.

I realize Elysians can drop pod assault turn 1, but my group plays no FW lists (models OK).

Thoughts include a skyshield pad or drop pod.

Get a platoon with conscripts. Now, good luck to your opponent trying to get rid of 100 bodies in one turn...and good luck to you trying to paint 100 bodies.

Except Valks are not as efficient as other things in this roles and they are an expensive tax. I like drop sentinels, Venators, and maybe an allied Knight they are coming to rescue.
He doesn't want to use FW so I have nothing more to add, oh hey, how about a Knight your fliers are coming to rescue. Yeah it can be taken down in a turn but if you have a few other units well hidden and secure I doubt most opponents can get rid of everything.

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM!

Find a store / gaming group that lets you play forgeworld lol

Until then use the sky shield landing pad and park a flyer on it.

Allied drop pods, either through the Skyhammer Formation or a Flesh Tearer Strike Force giving taxi pods to your veterans.

In single army probably a Fortification of some sort. probably a bunker with maxed void shields and some dudes inside.

Thanks for the input all.

The plan was to use vanilla guard to show that FW and vanilla guard aren't THAT different. I'll probably just use the FW list and pay IG points for vendettas/not go too nuts on the specific wargear stuff/treat voxes etc like they do in the guard book.

Just get Imperial Armor Volume #3 2nd Edition and run the Elysian Drop Troops. Not only are you able to "Drop Pod Assault" with Valkyries, Drop Sentinels, Sky Talons and Sentry Guns (same principal half of those units rounding up can come in turn one) but you also get Vendettas for only 130pts. This makes perfect sense and totally fair that they are cheaper since they have access to no tanks or treaded vehicle of any kind, their commanders have no orders to issue and compete with Vulture Gunships for slots.

Unbound drop pods. For 35pt you basically get impassable terrain that gives you a +5 cover save. Bring like, 9 of them. Youll have 5 drop pods on the first turn. You can block your opponent in with them, and its only around 320pt. Plus the next turns you bring in more.

Hi all,

Thanks for the input all. Especially to gwarsh41, calling out some pretty serious forum noobishness.

Here were some thoughts I had thanks to a bunch of input from you guys. The IA 3 is on order. In case folks/tournies are not willing to let me go that route, what do you all think of these options? Again, I'm still trying to hold on to aspects of fluff since I'm not all that interested in ultimate killy-ness. Again, theme is imperial navy.

Option 1: The navigator and his guards make planetfall
Librarian +/- conclave + 5-9 shotgun scouts in a pod

Option 2: Grey Knights show up and navy has extraction duty
Librarian/grand master + terminators

Option 3: ???
Reclusiam command squad - Chaplain on bike, command squad on bikes, storm shields, grav guns/flamers/combat weapons, apothecary, razorback 'cuz we have to...

Inquisitorial bikers is kinda badass sounding...

Option 4: The =][=
Inquisitor(s) and retinue (crusaders) in a valkyrie on a skyshield pad OR just chillin in a bunker.

Option 5: Officio Assassinorum
Culexus in a vendetta on a skyshield

Option 6: Ship's tech priests
Destroyers + tech priest. Kastellan maniple is also possible but it's mad expensive and I'm not that impressed by its firepower.
