Hey Dakka

I'm interested in a few units, but not sure if they're useful or not. Maybe you legends can help me out?

A) I was wandering if the Commissar General is a good option to take over the CCS for Death Korps. He's a lot cheaper... He just can't issue any orders.

B) Are Engineers with a Hades Drill worth it? Shotguns are short range... But they have 4+ saves, and with the drill, they can deep strike with a 4++.

C) Is the Mole Launcher a good upgrade for the Engineers? It kinda seems cool, but being only 24" range kinda hurts...

What are your opinions?

Cheers

A) I wouldn't take the Commissar General unless you had a specific tactic for it in mind. The 30 points extra is worth having the orders, especially when you look at how the orders can combine with the artillery units. I like using mine with Master of Ordnance and Autocannon.

B) I think that overall the Engineers are a very good troops choice, and preferable to the Platoons unless you are going for mass infantry. The shotguns are indeed short range, but then all you're basically losing is 10 S3 AP- shots at 12-24" range, which is no real loss at all. I have yet to try out the Hades, but am very excited for it and think on paper it looks good. I intend on attaching an allied Inquisitor to the unit.

C) I think the Mole Launcher is thematically and aethetically an extremely cool weapon, with super cool rules. Sadly, it's not worth the points if you're going for optimum effectiveness. Short range heavy weapons are always a pain to use right, especially in a unit armed with Assault weapons that want to keep on moving. The weapon is too inaccurate to be reliable, since you don't reduce the scatter by BS. I still keep one in my army, but for casual games or making up points.

I agree with God In Action. My 2ยข...

A) It depends if you want access to CCS orders and staff and how much HQ tax you are willing to pay. Bring it Down is a nice boost for your artillery. IMO, the CCS is more versatile.

B) You don't take Engineers for their stats, you take them for the Hades drill! D6+2 HoW armorbane/shred attacks on the charge with melta stats is killer! Tactics wise, run all but one Engineer out front of the Hades. Get the front runners gunned down and gain T7 3+ for the unit!

C) The mole launcher is a niche weapon. More often then not your going to want your Engineers moving which is a problem since the mole is heavy. I think it can be effective in terrain heavy boards or, even better, zone mortalis.

Thanks for the replies guys. After this, I've put the Egineers into my army with the Hades, cos dem stats though. And the CCS. But I'm not gunna use the mole as it seems far too situational and a weird weapon to give to a unit like this

Remember that drill engis are elites, not troops.
As cool as they are, you simply can't run your army around drills-and that's a shame because if you could I might have started a DKoK army.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

I find Death Korps to be far superior to normal IG. The one squad of 10 Engineers and a Drill for Elite is actually incredible by itself (used it last night in a game) Their Death Riders are amazing and way better than rough riders, because they're actually useful. Their cannons are amazing. And the fact that the entire army is practically fearless makes them incredibly reliable. 20 Death Korps infantry can do a job 50 Astra Militarum infantry can't. Also, Cyclops Demolition Drones. Not only are they an epic distraction unit, but if they do succeed, that's a large blast in the enemy's lines. They're also dirt cheap. Take 3 for 90pts and watch as entire squads are blown to bits or watch your opponent scramble their entire army to try and destroy them.
Death Korps, I find, are a pretty strong army. Much more so than vanilla Astra Militarum.

This is good reading for me

I haven't yet not played a single game with my dkok since they are still on the construction and/or painting stage but the engineers + Hades sounds exactly what I have hoped for
I have even converted my 10x engineer squad so they all have one of each weapon that the rules let them carry so I defiantly hope to see some guns blazing here in the future
