Is there a role for the two AA tanks in a all purpose list?

They are cheap enough to easily include in most armies but the limited range of targets make adding them a bit of a risk.

Skyfire also works on things like skimmers. Lots of that kicking around as well. The stalker has enough shots in the air that it’s not useless against ground targets. And as you say, they are pretty cheap.

I might take one for a TAC list. In general I think the stormtalon is a better TAC choice, but if you have a mech themed list, I could see taking the AA tanks.

the problem is that the stalker and hunter are fairly one dimensional unit, they always have skyfire so they always snapshot at the ground, when you can have planes with skyhammers that work around this limitation, or a deredeo which is three times as rugged, twice as heavily armed with better guns, and who can choose not to have skyfire so he isnt in dire need of twin linking to improve his math hammer.

I played one game against them and think they are a solid choice for a battle company in a tournament environment. As said not many points and great versus fliers and FMC.

Does one stand out over the other?

Sheer volume of shots leads me to pick the Stalker but AP2 vs AP4 is a big deal.

It isn't a big deal because it's all about glancing to death.

The Hunter has a neat trick versus Jetbikes. It always snap shots them, but since you are likely to miss, you trigger the Savant Lock ability, which does work on Jetbikes.

Still, the Stalker, especially in a squad of 3, is probably the better option.

Skyfire works against skimmers.

I think that the the Stalker /hunter formation is a great answer for the Space Marine double demi-companies lack of aa for cheap.

You really don't have to worry about anything else

It also means that your opponents AA is wasted, as opposed to taking Talons, Ravens and Raptors for your own AA.

True.

Btw, someone said that the Stalkers aa gun was ap4, I was under the impression it was an ap3 weapon which is one of its selling points IMO. I could be wrong though.( no codex handy at the moment)

The splitfire ability is also great as it lets you put weight of fire down the field against land targets that your going to be snapfiring at anyways when all the air targets are gone.

It's Heavy 3 S7 AP4

Still, when three in the squadron gives Ignore Cover, you don't really need AP2 to knock Flyers out the sky. Only thing that may give problems are Flyrants due to 3+ armour - but then the Hunters are S7 AP2 so getting them to jink should be enough to mitigate them for a turn.

True. That ignores cover is brutal

Ignore cover is great but it feels like it defeats one of the advantages and that's the cheapness of the unit. At 200+ points, you're taking this unit instead of something like a Raven.
