What are the strong options for LotD?

Relentless means heavy weapons are viable and ignore cover bolters seem to push the squad towards anti infantry.

The two flamer options seem somewhat odd considering everything ignores cover, I think the added range of the heavy bolter would make it superior to the heavy flamer.

I believe that LotD is one of those odd units that can actually benefit from mixed weapons.

For instance I have had pretty good success with a plasma gun, multi-melta, and combi-grav on mine.

BTW unless it changed its Slow & Purposeful not Relentless= no overwatch. FYI.

It has 7 HQs, 2 Troop types with Dedicated Transports, 5 Elite units, 5 Fast Attack units, 6 Heavy Support units, 2 Formations with unique units not in the rest of the codex, and 2 LOW choices.

Most people go with either Meltas, Plasma, or a mix of both, while the Sergent gets a Grav. Their codex opens up an option to go with Heavy Bolters to take advantage of some special rules that seems neat, but that's not available in the SM codex.

Another option would be to gear for AV work. While the ignore cover is nice for bolters, jinking skimmers tanks can just eat the melta and die.

Frankly there is something to be said for all the options, although I’d steer away from the flamers personally. If I just wanted to do that sort of thing, I’d put 2xHF in a sternguard squad and pod them in. Ignores cover AV/AP2 is a lot harder to get.

Plasma cannon is always useful, especially against ravenguard/windriders. I run one squad flamer & heavy flamer, another hvy bolter and plasma gun, and another melta and multi-melta. Have a plasma cannon and 2nd melta to switch around depending on the opposing army.

It's all about Melta. Melta Gun, Multi-Melta, and Combi-Melta/Grav. Ignoring cover for vehicles is a blessing overall. Sternguard can take care of Infantry, and we have Bikes for heavier lifting.

Seems like there are more cover-reliant targets with a T value vs an AV.

for the heavy weapon either plasmacannon or multimelta. having ignores cover on either of those things makes the squad a threat that your opponent has to pay attention to. As far as special weapon, I always go plasmagun. it matches range with the multimelta and matches damage with the plasmacannon.

Make sure to remember though that LotD are 'slow and purposeful' not 'relentless'. it makes a big difference tactically. It also means that I take the plasma cannon more often as it wouldn't get to overwatch anyway. but it also means that I invest in either a power axe or fist for my sgt in the squad.

Which Sternguard can force lots of saves on, and Grav Bikers are a cheaper means to wound easier. LotD have that specific tool to deal with harsher vehicles.

Agreed. Multimeltas in the hands of the legion ignore all the critical weakness of a multimelta:

accurate deep strike deals with the range issue and means getting inside armourbane range is easy

slow and purposeful turns it into an assault weapon so you don't have to snap fire the thing

ignores cover deals with jinking targets

plasma cannons are also good.

I'd either take a plasma/plasma/plasma squad with plenty of bodies and a melee weapon on the sergeant (because I'm likely to be attacking something bolter fire can hurt) or a minimum sized melta/melta/melta squad to not waste bodies.

In a legion detachment, the other option is a full sized unit with heavy bolter, melee weapons and the animus, which makes for a nice warlord's unit - good crowd control, REALLY hard to kill and with the best potential to take advantage of the armourbane bolt weapons if you get them.

In the era of the waveserpent, melta-multimelta-combiweapon (grav or melta) was a no-brainer.

These days, with less jinking vehicles in the metagame, the plasma options seem more worth a look, though the melta remains very good. Depends on what the rest of your list does - kit out to fill a niche.

I like mine all melta (born of facing so many wave serpents and guard armour). They land, pop their target, then usually bog something down in assault. My buddy goes all plasma, to mixed results (although I think that boils down to him not having a specific role in mind for them).

Locarno nailed it pretty much.

What about a mixed loadout?

Multi melta, plasma gun and combi grav?
Gives a lot of AP2/1 shots that have similar effective range as your bolters.

This sounds like one of the better load outs to me.
