Disclaimer: I initially made this for friends who are NOT 40k players, to share the joy of "The Hobby". I just needed a place to post.

The mission was "the Scouring". With my Blood Axe Ork Armoured Krumpany, I faced against my good friend's Imperial Guard Armoured Company. In his defense, he was playing at a disadvantage to fit his army at 500 points and didn't take a Command Squad. Next time, he should trounce me with a more optimal list.

I have got to say - whilst the comic book format may rule out a small amount of detail - it is one of the most entertaining, funny and visually appealing formats I've seen for a while. Very good report, am hoping for more of these! Gotta love the DANGER ZONE...

The armies that I collect:

- Tyranids, 2,000 pts.
- Orks, 1,250 pts.
- Tau, 750 pts.
- Guard (PDF), 750 pts.

(Yes I have a thing for horde armies to some extent)

Sorry about this, I know it's been awhile, but I gotta own up. The same player, at the same points value, nearly trounced me with 1 simple move: taking Hellhounds (over Leman Russ tanks).

Thus, my whole TOTAL ORK VICTORY wasn't because he was a bad player, but he had the wrong tool at the time. Hellhounds were clearly more optimal for a fast horde like Orks. He was merely accommodating my own shortcoming of having a small combat patrol-sized army, and used what he had on hand. That said, we were both impressed by how Hellhounds performed, which IMHO is an overlooked vehicle in this age of D weapons and different types of Titans.

-----

The above is a minor lesson learned, but here's a greater one, having played more of these combat patrol games (we do this because we can fit these in waiting on other games):

Orks are considered one of the low tier armies (whereas, say, Eldar and Necrons are considered top), but they excel at these lower points game. Their problem is actually scalability.

I made this comic mainly because my non-40k friends found my Orks the funniest, thus they lend themselves better to this comic book format, but subsequently I found it to perform really well at these combat patrol-like games.

I loved it. Orks all the way. I'm trying to get a friend to play me at lower points, like 500 or 1000, but he insists on 1500 because he claims his nids aren't useful at lower size...is this true, are nids only good in medium sized games?

Fellow Dakkamites, thanks a lot for your comments. I honestly don't know if this format is any good, I wasn't fishing for praise, but I made this to share The Hobby with non-40k friends (a.k.a. normal people). Telling them what 40k is just leads to puzzled looks, so I tried to tell them what it feels like. And I think what 40k needs, more than new/better codices/rules/models, is new players.

I hope to make more. They're not hard to turn into a comic, but in the middle of a game, it's not so convenient to take good pictures without disrupting your opponent or slowing it down. The opponent here is a great guy and an excellent secondary school teacher, a really giving guy who is a great painter. You may notice one of his Veteran Squads are Victoria Lamb's female soldiers, he's awesome.

I loved the idea of using a Weirdboy in particular. There's so much comedic potential there, well done, my brother. In fact I loved all your ideas.

Thus, sorry for the late reply. I arranged the speech bubbles and text with PowerPoint and a comic book font, if you wish to make your own comics. Very easy (and fun) to do, and you're doing me a favour because I, too, want to read more battle reports like this myself. I know people do YouTube video battle reports, but this format lets us, the readers, control the time and level of detail we want to go into.

I'll also email our Dakkamite here, but I had dinner with a Tyranid player and frequent tournament winner (with other armies) to ask this question. The answer is: Yes, it seems Tyranids only operate on a large scale. Your friend is not trying to make excuses and is actually being very reasonable; he said 1500 points, we believe it should be 2000 points. Tyranids suffer "taxes" in the form of Synapse Creatures they need to actually play with (otherwise it's out of control, the army's controlling the player) and the few good units they have are either the cost of a Landraider (like Flyrants) or Formations to make work. The sad thing is, above that point level, like at 2500 points, they start suffering again because other armies start bringing Forgeworld Lords of War they have a hard time to deal with and are great at killing their hordes.

Tyranids seem, to me and I'm not an expert on them, to be really stuck between a rock and a hard place. They only seem optimal in large-scale games, then get hit hard just a little beyond that. I'm an Ork player like you, and though we're seen as a low-tier army, Tyranids really have it even worse. I genuinely hope the rumoured Genestealer Cults mini-Codex (I'm writing right now just as Deathwatch: Overkill is about to come out) to help my Tyranid friends out.

I dunno what's next. It's very spur of the moment, but love to see your reports too.
