I recall seeing some fluff that the World Eaters ended up with red armour rather than the white and blue of the HH days through dying it with the viscera of dead enemies or something similar, and I'm wondering if there's any source on when this practice started. I'm painting a HH WE unit at the moment and I'd like to experiment with the effect, but if it's something that didn't come until later then I'll leave it off.

Thanks in advance!

I thought they just stopped cleaning the blood of there enemy's off there armour and it just eventually turned solid red. I'm probably wrong but that's what I remember

Blood doesn't dry red so I'd think it's safe to answer the thread with 'never'.

During the shadow crusade, Lorgar (I think, possibly another word bearer) recommends it to Angron(or was it Kharn? Memory fails).

So I think it starts during the Ultramar shadow crusade (which is also when angron turns daemon ) and picks up pace until they are all pretty red by the siege of terra. (Obviously no reference for that yet, just old siege of terra diaoramas had them red )

True, it makes very little sense, but this is 40k and GW we're talking about! Sense exited Stage Left several thousand years beforehand...

I''ve failed to find the original art, it's on the web somewhere.. you can see a bit on this link.. where there are world eaters in a mix of colours http://www.blacklibrary.com/warhammer-40000/kharn-eater-of-worlds-ebook.html
Not read the ebook, it might have some clues?

During the "raven flight" audio book corax notices world eaters smearing their armour with blood and laughing. So from Istvaan V would be a good guess.

In Eater of Worlds, which is a few years after the scouring, there's still a good few world eaters in the white and blue, but the majority of the survivors start to wear the red and brass.
