Bought a core set way, way back and forgot about it til just recently when a couple of friends and I decided to dust the thing off and open her up.

We had an absolute blast.

My question is: What's the best way to expand from the core set if we're looking to keep rebellion and empire sides at roughly equal power? What blisters and expansion packs would we buy in order to keep the game fresh, exciting and varied?

I already have a second core set, so we've got that out of the way.

Well, the good news is that the game is balanced, so equal points ~= equal power. There's the odd outlier and stronger combo, but nothing too egregious.

The bad news is I'm afraid you're going to buy all of it, it is inevitable.

But personally I'd look at large base ship or the Aces box for both sides, the Aces are good value, and the large base ships offer something different play wise.

Of course, you could always pick up Most Wanted and introduce a third faction, or blisters of the Starter set ships for the extra upgrades, or...

You see what I mean?

Oh god. I was afraid of this. Ah well, least the game is fun as hell.

For now i'd like to stay away from the large based ships. The fast paced dogfighting with a bunch of little guys is what really captured our interest in the game. But the aces packs seem like a good start.

Let's have this discussion again in a month, we'll see how you feel about the large base ships.

Is it worth it getting the new core set if you already have the old core set?

Getting the new Core Set could be worth it. You'd get two new ships, new upgrades, extra dice and templates. The rules glossary covers most of the new rules that were introduced after the old book. The new damage deck is also good. So it is certainly a useful set to grab.

I personally after getting the core set picked up the rebel aces and imperial aces expansion packs, I feel its not too bad of a way to start off. If you have some friends that have no x-wing ships or just the starter getting both aces packs allows you to do a 100 point game with them with just what you have.

If you get both those off miniature market it will set you back 40$ so for 4 more ships not too bad. Both the aces packs come with unique cards for the ships in the packs so if you like the tie interceptor, b-wing and a-wing its worth getting.

^ is a useful website, on the main page if you scroll down you can select any ship/set and see what is contained within, you can never go wrong on purchasing ships because the ships themselves or some of the pilot abilities look like a lot of fun to play.

I would get both Aces packs, a Y-wing, Tie Advanced, Tie Bomber, Falcon and a firespray. This gives you all of the iconic ships from the original trilogy and a nice mix of ships and upgrades that will let you build a variety of lists to play against one another.

Very much a great suggestion. I would also get the X-Wing and TIE expansions because there are really useful pilots and upgrades in those.
