I've recently gotten a friend interested in wargaming, particularly AoS (I've been playing 40k for a while).

After some consideration he has chosen to play Wood Elves and I have chosen WoC/Daemons (Mostly Nurgle).

I had dabbled in WHFB years ago but I don't know enough to guide him on units and purchases.

He is particularly interested in the Sisters of the Thorn and the Sylvaneth big tree dudes.
I'm interested in the Nurgle Rotbringers stuff that got released during the End Times (those Blightkings are gorgeous )

Is there anyone that can help us with advice, game balance and initial purchases? Looking to start small and build up.

Would be much appreciated!

To be honest, you probably won't have too many problems if you stick to roughly equal numbers of Warscrolls and don't go too silly (30+) on unit sizes. Stay away from the Great Unclean one (just for now), let him have a single Treelord, and you can be pretty free and easy about the rest.

If you do that for a few games, you will get into the swing of it and be able to figure out when the big units and powerful stuff can be brought in.

Oh, and see if you can play actual scenarios/battleplans rather than just the 'stand up fight' in the rules sheet - your games will be a lot more fun and you can mess around with the 'balance' between your two forces just by swapping sides in them (so, if he steamrollered you as the attacker in one scenario, get him to be defender next time).

If you have any specific questions about units, just give us all a shout here!

Just come up with some agreements like similar number of wounds, similar number of warscrolls being used, only 1-2 monsters, and 1-4 hero keywords. If you both do this your games should be fairly balanced.

Another option is to look at formations/battleplans. The Treefolk have one which includes 4 characers and three monsters (branchwraith and three treelords) and then a large number of troops. I knw the blightking army has similar battleplans, if you stick to 1-4 characters, 3 max monsters, and all others being normal or elite troops you should both have a good time.

I believe most nurgle heroes are wizards (the glottkin and his folk) as well as the treelords, so you should be pretty equal there too with spells and unbinding eachother's spells.

The formations come with some nifty rules as well. GW has done well so far to make sure the formations are pretty balanced with eachother when taken of similar size.

There is some Glotkin/nurgle specific formations in the The Realmgate Wars: Quest For Ghal Maraz book. I would also recommend that you either buy that book or the one before it. It provides excellent battle plans, and other cool stuff. Just think of it as your one Core Rule book sort of purchase in 40k terms.
